The Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF) has placed UCL Economics first for 4* world-leading research outputs and research environments, with scores of 72% and 100% respectively. The Department also placed third in its overall ranking with 65% of all indicators ranked as 4*.

Commenting on the results, Head of Department, Antonio Guarino said:

“We’re proud to rank as the top department in the UK for research outputs and research environment. I want to thank every single colleague in the Department for their amazing, inspirational work and commitment to producing pioneering research over the last few years. Research is a collaborative effort and I would like to congratulate all our research co-authors in other institutions and all the colleagues who visited us in the past years, making our department a uniquely vibrant intellectual environment.”

The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions and is implemented by Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation.

The REF assesses three elements:

  • quality of research outputs
  • impact of research beyond academia
  • the environment that supports research
