Low-Latitude Paleoceanography and Phytoplankton Productivity Through the Eocene/Oligocene Transition

The IODP drillship, the JOIDES Resolution, and Tom Dunkley Jones sampling IODP Exp. 320 deep-sea sediment cores
This project investigates the link between marine ecosystem productivity and the shift to glacial climates that occurred across the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) ~34 million years ago. This will be primarily be achieved by analysing calcareous nannoplankton assemblages through the EOT from new sediment cores obtained during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 320 (March-May 2009). These will be used to determine the timing and nature of EOT biotic and oceanographic perturbations within the Pacific Equatorial upwelling zone.
