CCHS seeks to critically explore the definition of heritage, to interpret evolving forms of heritage and identity, and to address issues of heritage justice across the entire heritage enterprise. The CCHS Annual Lecture provides a forum for a leading contemporary thinker to share their views on a contemporary issue that engages with different domains and heritage fields. The CCHS Annual Lecture was delivered in 2019 by the CEO of Horniman, one of the UK’s leading museums, Dr Nick Merriman. Nick has been the CEO of the Horniman since 2018 and he held leadership positions in major UK institutions prior to that. In his Lecture, he addressed the role the museum and heritage sector can play in tackling the climate crisis. Museums and heritage institutions can utilise their collections to tell stories about the relationship between people and the natural world across time and place and to help them face societal challenges such as the climate crisis. Collections can be a source of inspiration that can support ethical and responsible research, public engagement and partnerships for developing solutions and climate action. Nick spoke convincingly and passionately about the huge potential for the sector to tackle this challenge by empowering both its staff and its local communities, and by supporting community partnerships to tackle environmental issues.
