Educational Media Loan Kits
About the service
If you are academic staff, and need to create media content to support your teaching and research, you can now use our media equipment loan service, this is also an excellent opportunity to try equipment before you place an order to buy
All equipment comes in a handy carry case which includes: power supply and memory card (for cameras), battery charger, battery, remote control, and all necessary leads to connect to your computer. Where appropriate, we try and combine items into kits which will include a microphone, tripod, and LED light as required. If you have very specific kit requirements, the team has an extensive knowledge of products and great relationships with our suppliers, with the ability to purchase many items with an education discount. If you wish to purchase any items we are happy to assist you in this process.
When borrowing an item from our stock, you assume full responsibility for it and are expected to return it in the same condition as it was loaned to you in. Departments or individuals will be charged for any missing or broken items and the full cost of replacement for items that are returned unrepairable. Please read our the terms of service before borrowing any equipment.
If you wish to use the service, please contact the Educational Media team via email in the first instance to discuss your requirements. The team will be happy to advise on the best solution for your needs and can offer tips on video and audio recording.
Note : We operate a dedicated service for IOE staff and students, please contact the Educational Media team based at the IOE for further information.

- Where do I go to collect/return equipment?
The Educational Media team running this service is based in the Cruciform Building. Please enter the Cruciform through the main entrance on Gower Street, show your ID to security upon entry and please use the hand sanitising points. You should avoid using the lift if possible and instead take the stairs to the basement.
Collections and returns are made from Room G.08 which located in the Cruciform Building on Huntley Street
- What are your opening hours?
Opening hours are from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Loans are issued by appointment only to ensure all safety conditions can be met - please don't turn up without an appointment. Currently we are still operating a restricted service due to staff availability but we will try our utmost to assist all requests where we can.
- How long can I borrow equipment for?
Loans are currently available for a maximum of one week ( 5 working days), we only have a limited amount of equipment so to ensure everyone can access the equipment they need we ask that you return all equipment as soon as you can.
Bookings must be made at least two days in advance. To book a slot for collection, contact the team. Once your booking is confirmed, this is your appointment time, if you miss it we may have difficulty in offering you another time slot. Items must be returned on the date and time agreed.
If you require technical support whilst loaning the equipment this can be done remotely if required, or please state you need assistance when booking and we will where possible allow extra time.
- Can I specify what equipment I want?
Wherever possible we will try to provide users with the equipment they request but this cannot be guaranteed. It will depend on our stock levels and the fact that we are still putting the kit into quarantine (72 hours) after use and need time to undertake the subsequent cleaning of all returned items.
Please note: Lavalier Microphones are now available, however due to the rise in Covid and Flu infections and the difficulty in ensuring they are clean and safe to use between loans, we recommend that these are purchased via IDT if one of these is considered a necessity.
Shotgun microphones, windshields, stands and Boom Poles are available.
