Engineering (Civil) MEng

This four year programme builds on the Civil Engineering BEng with a final year design project and advanced modules, offering a direct route to Chartered (CEng) Status.

Programme information

The BEng and MEng Engineering (Civil) programmes follow a common curriculum for the first three years. You can delay the final decision between which route you graduate with until the end of your second year. You do not need to apply for more than one programme, as applicants to both programmes are treated equally.

Highlights of our MEng programme include:

  • a world-class education brought to you by leading researchers, educators and practising engineers. This is supported by a structured personal tutorial scheme, subject-specific clinics and student mentoring;
  • two residential field courses, giving you hands-on experience of surveying, construction and site management;
  • a major research project that develops your technical skills and ability to write technical reports;
  • a challenging capstone design project that replicates industry environments, giving you an advantage over other civil engineering graduates;
  • our London location; studying in London is the perfect setting for civil engineering students because of the exciting range of projects underway (e.g. Crossrail), and the access to professional institutions.

Year 1

Your first year is structured around a series of week-long group-based projects, known as Scenarios and Challenges, which focus on real-world engineering problems. In addition to these problem-based activities, you will attend lectures, workshops and laboratory classes to develop your knowledge of theoretical concepts. These theory-based classes are supplemented with both design and professional skills classes, and an engineering impact assessment, enabling you to tackle 21st century engineering problems the way we think civil engineers should – with creativity, ethical considerations and a will to make the world better.

All first year modules are compulsory.

Year 2

Year 2 follows the same format as Year 1, but the subjects become more advanced and the group projects require more rigorous analysis. At the end of your second year, there is a one week residential field course on a building site, where you will work alongside practising engineers to build scaled structures to the same standards and techniques that are applied on professional construction sites.

*You will undertake the first module of an IEP Minor subject, chosen from a wide range of options, in Year 2. Find out more on the Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) webpage.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in the UCL Study Abroad programme in the third year of your MEng. Applications for this take place in your second year.

Year 3

In Year 3 you will be able to put what you have learnt in Years 1 and 2 into practice and further progress your understanding of theoretical concepts that underpin a successful career as a civil engineer. You will carry out, in pairs, an investigative piece of research in your area of interest, within a range of topics that reflect the broad nature of our undergraduate degree programme. You will identify the limits of current civil engineering knowledge and gain the ability to conduct research under expert guidance.

Year 4

The capstone of your MEng is the challenging Integrated Design Project (IDP), where you work in large groups to design a major civil engineering infrastructure. This will draw from your knowledge and understanding across a range of disciplines, as well as your project management, team work and presentation skills. Each project is supported by leading practitioners from the industry and experienced designers based in the department. In addition, you can choose from a wide range of Master’s level modules covering advanced technical skills and professionally relevant topics, in line with your specialist interests.

Optional module selection process
  • You will have the opportunity to select four specialist level 7 modules from across UCL. These are split into 'Advanced Option A' and 'Advanced Option B' choices. 
  • A minimum of two should come from the below categories (Advanced Option A); you can pick more than one module within a particular category.
  • Some of these modules are scheduled at the same time, so you will have to check your timetable.
  • A maximum of two modules out of your four selections can be chosen from any Level 7 modules across UCL, or the following CEGE MSc programmes; Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management MSc; Engineering for International Development MSc; Environmental Systems Engineering MSc; and our Geospatial Sciences MSc routes. These choices make up Advanced Option B. 
  • Again, these choices cannot clash with the Integrated Design Project (IDP) or your other module selections.
