Participate in the SMILES Study

PARTICIPANTS WILL NEED TO:

  • Live in the UK
  • Diagnosed with homozygous (SS) sickle cell disease (SCD)
  • Aged 3 – 7.99 years
  • History of sleep-disordered breathing
  • Ability to speak and understand English
  • SMILES is a double-blinded randomised controlled trial that will enable objective investigation of the extent to which Montelukast can improve symptoms or signs of sleep-disordered breathing including snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, oxygen instability, low nocturnal SO2 or any other sleep-disordered breathing, by reducing adenoidal size and in turn reduce common complications of SCA, including cognitive dysfunction and white matter damage. Patients will be randomised to either Montelukast for 12 weeks or placebo.
  • Eligible children with SCD will be asked to join the study via consultant paediatrician or haematologist or from ENT surgery waiting lists or their local sleep laboratory
