Centre for Doctoral Training in Molecular Modelling and Materials Science
The Centre for Doctoral Training in Molecular Modelling and Materials Science (M3S CDT) is co-funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and a range of external sponsors to combine rigorous training with research excellence in a number of programmes.
Currently, the M3S CDT runs a number of postgraduate programmes including the A*STAR programme: a 3-year PhD programme; industrial partnership PhDs; and the MSc in Molecular Modelling programme. We provide students with training not only in cutting-edge research technologies, but also in the development of business and entrepreneurial skills - key elements that are highly sought-after by employers in industry, academia and business.
We recruit doctoral students every year.
Originally set up under the former EPSRC Collaborative Training Account allocation to UCL, the M3S CDT had its first student intake in 2005. Initially aimed at recruiting five doctoral students per year, by year three the success of the programme led us to over-recruit in 2006 and since then, demand from both industrial sponsors and highly qualified students has significantly exceeded our quota. An independent EPSRC panel reviewed in 2006 all UK EngD centres and viewed the M3S EngD programme as highly commendable. In December 2008, the CDT was awarded 5-year funding from EPSRC. In December 2013, due to its continued excellent performance, the CDT received a further 5-year funding, which included 30 EPSRC studentships (6 per year).
