About this event

The UCL CDI and AWS would like to invite you to learn about the AWS Cloud and how it can be leveraged for rapid research and innovation at scale.

In this workshop you will explore core AWS services in hands-on labs. The practical components will be supported by theory and discussion sessions which will introduce research use cases and best practises.

Prerequisite knowledge:

This immersion day assumes no knowledge of AWS and accounts will be provided for the day, but attendees should be comfortable working in the Linux terminal and have a curiosity to learn.

Details:

The content breaks down into two practical components:

1. In the first section we will use the console to deploy a virtual machine, create a bucket to store objects and connect the virtual machine to the bucket. This covers what we want to do, deploy infrastructure, and what those core services consist of, compute, storage, networking and security controls.

2. In the second section we will repeat the exercise using the AWS command line interface. This will explore creating infrastructure with code and introduce the different ways of doing this with AWS. This will introduce a direction of travel in how we reliably and repeatably deploy infrastructure.

We will end the day by introducing the Well Architected Framework to explore why we recommend working in a particular way. Throughout the day, and at the reception afterwards, you will have the opportunity to speak with solutions architects about your research and innovation projects, how they might be run on AWS and further training that will help you succeed.
