Research summary

We use the power of C. elegans as an in vivo genetic model system with single-cell resolution to reveal fundamental principles of neural development, which should subsequently provide the basis for novel therapies and brain repair strategies.  In particular our aims are to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate left-right asymmetric neurogenesis and to address the mechanisms of plasticity and direct transdifferentiation during glial-to-neuron cell fate switches. 

To address these questions at the cellular and molecular leves we combine classic genetic and embryological approaches with state-of-the-art molecular and next-generation sequencing approaches. It is our realistic long-term goal to understand the entire developmental program of clearly defined neuronal populations from fertilised egg to terminal differentiation. A deeper knowledge of neural specification, plasticity and transdifferentiation in vivo will promote a better understanding of congenital neural disease and allow more efficient in vitro generation of neurons for cell replacement therapies.
