Research summary

The Centre for Cell & Molecular Dynamics has a long track record (20+ years) of running advanced light microscopy imaging systems within the Division of Biosciences and has a sustainable, proven business model of cost recovery for equipment maintenance/service and a reserve fund that has historically been used for ‘matched funding schemes’ for replacement/additional microscopes. There is a dedicated technical support team of 4 full-time and one part-time HEFC-funded staff.  As part of the annual accountability and reporting process, the full economic costs for each microscope are calculated to help guide our access charges for users. A review committee determines how such costs are to be met for the coming two years (through user charges, institutional subsidy and other funding sources). Through such a mechanism, we ensure that there are always sufficient funds for maintenance of, and occasional instrument upgrades to all microscopes beyond the warranty period. At present, user charges for access to confocal and multi-photon microscopes in our Core Facilities are around £20-£30 per hour for UCL academics. Overall, the UCL Core Imaging Facilities have a long and outstanding track record of providing superb service at reasonable cost to their user community and to renewing and upgrading imaging resources when necessary.
