A plastid ion channel

6 October 2021

New collaborative work between the Patel lab in CDB and the lab of Silvia Moreno at the University of Georgia (USA) published in Nature Communications describes the identification of a two-pore channel in Toxoplasma, the causative agent of Toxoplasmosis.

The two-pore channel localizes to the apicoplast  - a chloroplast-like but non-photosynthetic organelle. Here, it is requited for parasite growth by maintaining integrity of the apicoplast, contact with the neighboring endoplasmic reticulum and transfer of calcium between the two.
