Nature Comms paper from Duchen lab reveals PI3K-Akt-mTORC1 as potential therapeutic target
29 November 2021
Mutations of mtDNA affect around 1 in 5000 of the population and cause a range of diseases for which no effective treatment is available.
The work, which was led by Duchen lab PhD student Chih-Yao Chung, highlights the role of dysfunctional cell signaling pathways associated with a mtDNA mutation that causes the disease ‘MELAS’ for which there is no treatment. We have shown that bioenergetic function can be rescued by drugs which inhibit those signaling pathways, suggesting possible novel therapeutic approaches.
