See https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-22420-9. In accord with virtually all ligand-gated receptors in the brain, following activation, GABAA receptors (GABAARs) undergo desensitization. The impact this has on inhibitory neurotransmission remains largely unknown. Here the authors from Smart Lab describe an enduring form of long-term potentiation at inhibitory synapses that elevates synaptic current amplitude for 24 hrs following desensitization of GABAARs providing a potential physiological role for this ubiquitous phenomenon.
