It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Dame Georgina Mace CBE on 19th September 2020.

Georgina joined UCL in 2012 as the founding Director of the Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, where she continued to make unparalleled contributions to the science needed to underpin the conservation of biodiversity.

Her research revolutionised the measurement of our impacts on nature to reveal the magnitude and pattern of biodiversity loss, and its consequences for humans. The rigour and candour with which Georgina addressed these issues was key to convincing governments of the urgency of stemming biodiversity loss, and of nature’s critical role in development and in social justice.

Beyond these scientific achievements, Georgina’s enthusiasm, acuity, kindness, and continual optimism were an inspiration. Her legacy lives on in the generations of scientists, politicians, and other citizens transformed by contact with her, and with her science. We send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

We will miss her very much indeed.
