Automated design of synthetic microbial communities
Bez Karkaria and Alex Fedorec have had a new paper accepted in Nature Communications
Coordinated behaviour between genetically and phenotypically diverse cells is ubiquitous throughout nature. Through specialisation and compartmentalisation, diverse groups of cells are able to produce integrated multicellular functions. The paper computationally explores different ways in which we can engineer environmental interactions between microbes to enable stable coexistence of multiple species. We predict the most robust topologies in two and three strain networks, and unveil the most important underlying interactions to focus on in the future engineering of multi-species systems.
The lab extends congratulations to them both.
