Abstract: Anthropogenic pressure is causing an unprecedented loss of wildlife species worldwide, with drastic consequences for ecosystem functioning. One of the most widely adopted interventions to mitigate the current biodiversity crisis has been habitat protection and management. However, the potential conservation benefits of these interventions can only be delivered if they are effective. Despite growing evidence about the effectiveness of area-based conservation measures at safeguarding local biodiversity, there are still large geographic areas where the evidence does not exist or is incipient. In this talk, I will present two case studies using data from large camera trap surveys conducted in Brazil and Nepal to investigate the impact of habitat protection and management on the local mammal community.
