Perkins Group

 Professor Steve Perkins
I run the Structural Immunology Group at UCL in which we work with the complement proteins and antibodies of immunology. I am best known for the development of a novel constrained modelling method for neutron and X-ray scattering and analytical ultracentrifugation to determine their solution structures, where I am a lead Principal Investigator in CCP-SAS. We also employ other biophysical techniques to study molecular interactions, and also develop interactive web sites of genetic variants in the complement and coagulation proteins.
 Dr Lindsay McDermott
I am a Visiting Lecturer at UCL and a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University of Bedfordshire. I co-supervise PhD student Henna Zahid who is examining ligand binding by the fat depleting factor zinc alpha2 glycoprotein (ZAG).
 

Dr Jayesh Bhatt
Jayesh Bhatt works with small angle scattering and multiscale computer simulations of soft and hard matter. His current work involves creating ensemble models of proteins using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations as well as calculating the X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) profiles that best fit experimental data. His earlier work involved free energy calculations of nucleation systems, agglomeration kinetics, heterogeneous catalysis and NMR in porous materials.

 

 

Dr Danny Gale
Daniel Gale is a nephrologist with a clinical and research interest in genetic causes of kidney disease, including CFHR5 nephropathy, which results from a defect of complement alternative pathway regulation and which is endemic in Cyprus. On-going projects aim to improve understanding of the pathophysiology of CFHR5 nephropathy and to investigate other families with unexplained inherited kidney disease in order to uncover the genes responsible.

 

 Gar Kay Hui
I am studying the solution structure of human IgG antibodies and Fc receptors using X-ray and neutron solution scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, surface plasmon resonance and constrained modelling. Studying their structural interaction will be key in understanding the role of the IgG subclasses in the human body and their different functions.
 Amy Osborne
I am studying the complement proteins using a web-database of genetic variants to analyse the association of rare variants with the rare renal diseases aHUS and C3G. For this website I am also modelling the Factor H solution structure using Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics and experimental SAXS data to help us understand the effects of rare variants on Factor H structure and function.

I am studying the molecular mechanism of ligand binding by the fat depleting factor zinc alpha2 glycoprotein (ZAG) by a combination of molecular modelling, mutagenesis, fluorescence and protein crystallography.
 Valentina Spiteri
My research is focused on understanding the role that glycans play in the structure and stability of antibodies. In order to do this I use a combination of small angle x-ray and neutron scattering, mass spectrometry, analytical ultracentrifugation and CCP-SAS constrained scattering modelling.
 Hina Iqbal
I am studying the solution structures of the collagen region in mannan-binding lectin (MBL) using synthetic peptides and protein purifications, using a combination of analytical ultracentrifugation, small angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics. This will provide insights into the structure and flexibility of the MBL collagen helices.
 Jayesh Gor Facilities Manager
I manage the Molecular Interactions Facility which is comprised of two Beckman-Coulter XL-I analytical ultracentrifuges, a Biacore X100 surface plasmon resonance instrument and a Farfield dual polarisation interferometer. While the main users are from the group, I also help outside users to run experiments in the Facility.

I administer the Moodle on-line teaching website for the courses that Professor Perkins offers. I also answer any queries or problems the students may have.
