Research excellence framework

In the latest UK Research Excellence Framework UCL (REF2021) was ranked second in research power, 97% of “Engineering” outputs were ranked as either "world-leading" (4*) or “internationally excellent”

Biochemical Engineering Research Quality and Impact Highlighted in REF 2021 Outcome

This success was reflected in Biochemical Engineering which was part of the UCL submission to the ‘Engineering’ Unit of Assessment 12 (UoA12) together with colleagues in six other Departments within the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences.  For Engineering, UCL ranked 4th by GPA, and 5th by research power.  In terms of overall research quality 97% of our Engineering activities were rated 4* (‘world leading’) or 3* (‘internationally excellent’) with 61% in the 4* category. For pure research quality 95.5% of our Engineering research publications were rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The Department has always placed significance on the translation of its research into practical outcomes of benefit to society. This was confirmed in the REF2021 results for research impact. Biochemical Engineering contributed two of the eleven impact case studies, including Professor Daniel Bracewell's case study on nanofibre technologies to the UoA12 submission covering work on the development and commercialisation of novel biotherapeutics purification processes, and also the development of suspension culture approaches for CAR-T therapies for cancer. 100% of our impact case studies were considered world leading or internationally excellent, with almost three-quarters in the 4* category.
These outcomes reflect the tremendous efforts of all departmental staff, academic, technical and administrative, over the last five years and provide a solid basis on which to base future research.
