13 March 2019

ISR Director Paul Ekins is a co-chair on the new UN Global Environmental Outlook report published today. This report emphasises that damage to the planet is so dire that people's health will be increasingly threatened unless urgent action is taken.

GEO 6 report cover

The report has been produced by 250 scientists and experts from more than 70 countries, it warns that if we do not drastically scale up environmental protections, cities and regions in Asia, the Middle East and Africa could see millions of premature deaths by mid-century.

The report also highlights the fact that the world has the technology and scientific innovation we need to move towards a more sustainable development pathway. It goes on to stress that this can only be achievied with sufficient support from the public, business and political leaders.

Professor Paul Ekins said:

This report is meant to empower policymakers to win cross-departmental arguments in cabinet and provide information to business, civil society and youth who want to address these issues in their own way. If they take appropriate action, there is every reason to be hopeful. There is still time but the window is closing fast."“-    This report is meant to empower policymakers to win cross-departmental arguments in cabinet and provide information to business, civil society and youth who want to address these issues in their own way.
