ISR staff win UCL Media Award

11 May 2015

Christophe McGlade (R) wins UCL Media Award 2015

Congratulations to UCL ISR Research Associate, Dr Christophe McGlade (pictured right), and Director, Prof Paul Ekins, who last week won the UCL News Story of the Year award at last week's UCL Communications and Culture awards for their Nature article 'The geographical distribution of fossil fuels unused when limiting global warming to 2 °C'.

The article has received significant global media attention resulting in nearly 600 news articles including appearing in the New York Times, National Geographic, Sydney Morning Herald, Times of India and China Post.

The article, which states that a third of oil reserves, half of gas reserves and over 80 per cent of current coal reserves should remain unused from 2010 to 2050 in order to meet the target of 2 °C, also sparked significant political interest including from a number of US and Canadian Senators and the UK Parliament Select Commettees, as well as being cited by the Washington Post in connection to President Barack Obama's veto of the Keystone XL pipeline.
