Neoliberalism as a Global System: Private Power and Public Weakness Lecture Series 2023
Join us for our series of talks with Visiting Professor of Practice Damon Silvers on 'Neoliberalism as a Global System: Private Power and Public Weakness'.
These lectures will critically examine the increasingly popular concept of neoliberalism as a political economy regime that has been dominant in the global economy since 1980. The first lecture focuses on understanding neoliberalism as a global system of political economy rather than as a set of politics within advanced countries, and the paradox of neoliberalism, that an ideology of freedom produces a reality of power. The second lecture focuses on the consequences of neoliberalism for the capacity of states to effectively address major problems in global society against the background of challenges such as climate change, and looks at possible post-neoliberal futures. The lectures will draw upon the rapidly growing academic literature on neoliberalism and Professor Silvers' personal experiences in public policy making in the neoliberal age.
