Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Find out about applying for MSc, MA and MArch programmes

Which postgraduate programme is right for you?

MA, MSc and MPA

MA, MSc and MPA programmes are usually tutor-led. They allow you to expand your knowledge in a particular area and prodivde you with the skills and expertise to pursue further study and develop professionally.

Courses can be delivered by different methods, such as lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies, placements and field trips, and you should expect to carry out your own research, write essays and take part in individual and group project work.

Your performance will be assessed through course work and examinations, along with an individual dissertation undertaken during the summer on a subject of your choice.

MArch programmes provide students with the opportunity to carry out advanced study in architecture. Two programmes, MArch Architecture and MArch Architectural Design, require students to have completed a first degree in architecture, although MArch Urban Design is open to students coming from a range of academic disciplines.

All three MArch programmes have a strong emphasis on design and visual representation so a background in a related design or visually-orientated field will be an advantage.

The MRes programmes at The Bartlett provide structured and progressive research training, and are a strong foundation for doctoral study or careers in industry and the public sector.

Training in research techniques, combined with subject specific modules, will support your in-depth study, and the significant research components of an MRes programme will allow you greater freedom to explore and develop your field of study than is normally possible with an MSc.
