Research summary

Jessica's research is currently in the three following areas:

  • accommodating industry and diverse low value economic activities in high-value cities, with particular focus on London, looking at the impact of the ongoing loss of industrial land as a result of planning policy and development pressure;
  • the value of diverse economic activities and how to research local economies; and
  • the impact of planning deregulation on local economies, communities and sustainability.

Biography

Jessica is an Associate Professor in Planning and Urban Management, and the Director of Undergraduate Programmes at the Bartlett School of Planning. She is a practice-focused academic with research interests in spatial planning, economic development and social sustainability.  Her primary area of current research activity explores the relationship between planning, development and the ability of diverse and lower-value economic activities to thrive in cities.  Her PhD evaluated recent affordable workspace policies in London, and she continues to advise in this area. Jessica is actively involved in planning in London, she is a member of Just Space Economy and Planning, the London Planning and Development Forum and the Greater London Authority’s Industrial and Logistics Sounding Board. Prior to academia, she worked for 10 years in planning practice in both the public and private sectors - as an Associate for the planning and regeneration consultancy, Urban Practitioners, and for the London Borough of Enfield, where she was responsible for the Council’s Area Action Plans.  Jessica is an RTPI accredited town planner and holds a Ph.D. in Planning Studies from UCL, Masters Degrees in Town Planning (University of Westminster) and Contemporary Urban Studies (Goldsmiths College) and a Bachelors degree from the University of Oxford.
