The Bartlett has moved up the QS World Rankings by Subject to reach the number one spot for Architecture / Built Environment. With a score of 98/100 overall (up from 97.1 last year), The Bartlett has overtaken MIT (The Massachusetts Institute of Technology), who were last year's global number 1. We also scored 100 for academic reputation and 92.7 for employer reputation.

The news comes as the faculty is celebrating 100 years of The Bartlett name, and 100 years of global impact, with a story published every day for 100 days on the campaign website Bartlett100.com and events running throughout the year. Welcoming the timely achievement, Professor Alan Penn, Dean of The Bartlett, said:

The QS ranking is the most comprehensive worldwide assessment of university subjects - they reflect the opinions of academic colleagues and employers from all over the world as well as looking at citations to our research, and so are really quite robust. I am really pleased to see The Bartlett Faculty achieving the number one ranking in architecture and the built environment as we celebrate our centenary.”

The result is one of a number of successes for UCL in the 2019 QS World Rankings by Subject: the university has 10 subject areas ranked in the global top 10. Aside from The Bartlett’s number one spot, other highlights include UCL Institute of Education, which has retained the number one spot for Education, Archaeology, where UCL takes the number three spot, and Anthropology, where UCL is ranked fifth.

Professor David Price, UCL Vice-Provost (Research), said:

We are delighted to see that UCL has once again been recognised for its strong global performance across a wide range of subjects. It demonstrates the strength and breadth of our academic excellence and teaching, as well as our capacity to address some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. I would like to congratulate colleagues in UCL’s Institute of Education and The Bartlett Faculty of The Built Environment for being ranked No1 in the world. This is a tremendous achievement.”

Published annually, the QS World University Rankings cover 48 subjects by collecting opinions from thousands of academics and employers. They also analyse millions of research papers and citations over a five-year period to measure the impact of publications from institutions, as well as their productivity.
