Steve Fernandez will explore the importance of retrofit of our existing buildings to effectively tackle climate change and meet the ambitious carbon targets. It is now becoming necessary to appraise retrofit options for every site, so we need to understand how we can add asset value to our existing buildings and identify and mitigate the comparative risks of building reuse.
Jane’s talk will discuss recent UK initiatives such as the updated RICS Professional Statement on Whole Life Carbon in the Built Environment, the Built Environment Carbon Database (BECD) and the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard (UK NZCBS), linking them to her research on the Environmental Product Declarations for UK produced construction products and the availability of carbon data for construction products generally. She will explain how the RICS PS covers retrofit, and how the various initiatives can integrate together to help the Built Environment sector contribute to the UK achieving net zero.
About the Speakers
Steve Fernandez

Steve Fernandez is a Director at Arup leading a team of engineers and designers and has successfully managed and led multi-disciplinary design teams on a range of projects both across the UK and overseas, across all business sectors and brings a holistic design approach to projects which has grown from his combined engineering and architectural training. He is also the global Building Retrofit Leader at Arup. He is a chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Conservation Accredited Engineer. Steve is passionate about existing buildings and has worked on many high-profile existing building (retrofit) projects including the redevelopment of St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, the regeneration of the Newton and Arkwright Buildings in Nottingham and the transformation of Coal Drops Yard at Kings Cross in London. Steve was also a speaker at COP26 in Glasgow talking about how retrofitting existing buildings can help address the climate crisis. Steve is also a STEM ambassador, volunteering at local schools to inspire and enthuse the next generation of engineers and designers, and is a visiting lecturer at several universities, teaching architecture and engineering to students. He is actively involved with promoting higher achievements in education and engineering among people from black and minority ethnicity backgrounds and was selected in 2019 as one of six of the UK’s most inspirational BAME innovators in science, engineering and technology.
Jane Anderson

Jane Anderson has 25 years experience in embodied carbon and life cycle assessment (LCA) for the construction industry and was a co-author of the updated RICS Professional Statement on Whole Life Carbon in the built environment and a member of the Technical Steering Group of the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard on behalf of the Whole Life Carbon Network. She works as an approved verifier for a number of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) Programmes worldwide and is involved in standards development at European and International Level, covering EPD, digitisation of environmental information for construction products and building level-LCA. She has written numerous guidance documents on these issues for BRE, the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products and the Construction Products Association amongst others, and has recently competed a PhD looking at the role of EPD.
