About the event

This webinar will discuss the Beecroft Building, a world-class research facility recently constructed for the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. The high-specification laboratories and collaborative office environment will allow them to advance their cutting-edge research into trapped ion quantum computers and scanning tunnelling microscopy. Due to the atomic nature of this research, extremely tight levels of vibration and temperature control had to be provided. The successful delivery of such onerous criteria, which only exist in few facilities globally, necessitated an integrated building design approach and relied fully on collaboration across the whole design, client and contractor teams.

About the speakers

Nick Lawrence (Associate Mechanical Engineer, Hoare Lea): Nick is a chartered engineer and has worked in building services for over 15 years, working at Hoare Lea for the last 7 years and specialising in the science and research sector. He is currently working as the lead Mechanical engineer for the Life and Mind Building, the University of Oxford’s largest ever project.

Rebecca Fode (Hawkins\Brown): Since joining Hawkins\Brown seven years ago Rebecca has developed a specialty for higher education design, particularly research facilities that require technical sophistication and collaborative design sensibilities. She was the project Architect on the award-winning Beecroft Building for the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. With a passion for good design, she strives for the best and most creative solutions to all design challenges.
