About the event

Stratford Waterfront (East Bank) project is a mixed-used development in East London currently under construction, which includes residential towers alongside the V&A East Museum, UAL London College of Fashion, BBC Concert studio and Sadler’s Wells East Theatre.

The sustainability targets across the site are exemplary, particularly for energy and water consumption.

This lecture will focus on two challenges for Sadler’s Wells East Theatre and UAL London College of Fashion, featuring speakers from Buro Happold.

The challenge of the Sadler’s Wells Theatre is to integrate a naturally ventilated environmental strategy to as many spaces within the building as possible, and thereby rely on a passive solution to minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions. Marco – Sustainability discipline lead - will present how design team collaboration is essential to the success and future resilience of the natural ventilation design strategy for the foyer of the theatre.

The challenge of the UAL London College of Fashion is to minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions as well as maintaining thigh temperature and humidity control in the majority of the University building. Daniela - Sustainability project lead – will present how operational energy use prediction at design stage (CIBSE TM54 + HVAC simulation) can effectively optimise the MEP design and building operation.

The event will feature a presentation followed by an interactive Q&A session.

About the speakers

  • Daniela Catalano (Senior Building Physics Engineer, Buro Happold): Having previously worked in Milano as energy engineer in building and facility management sector and sustainable advisory for over 3 years Daniela moved on to the UK energy and M&E consultancy holding a position as sustainability engineer in building physics sector. Daniela is Chartered Engineer with eight years’ experience working in London to deliver local and international project within the built environment. She has been involved in BREEAM energy and environmental certifications and LEED assessment. Daniela brings her energy efficiency skills to sustainability team where her experience is used on a variety of projects across engineering sector. She enjoys being involved from the early conceptual design stage through project management and following with continuous commissioning/energy management.

  • Marco Mudoni (Senior Engineer, Sustainability and Building Physics, Buro Happold): Marco is an accredited Low Carbon Energy Assessor (LCEA-EPC Level 5) and he enjoys combining the elements to deliver practical, sustainable solutions by bridging the gap between the technical, commercial and people-related aspects. Over eight years, Marco has worked on a number of projects with high sustainability aspirations, across a range of topics with a great focus on actual performance beyond just building regulation energy compliance. Marco is passionate about streamlining processes, making the mundane but necessary aspects quicker so people can spend more time coming up with innovative solutions to complex problems.
