12 March 2024

Prof. Colin Marx from The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) has co-edited the book 'Urban informality and the built environment'.

book cover

Stemming from a 2016 initiative within The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of Built Environment designed to provide seed funds to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among doctoral students, this book presents different case studies from multiple geographies, drawing attention to the need for studying urban informality in the Global North and Global South.

Through The Bartlett Faculty's initiative, The Bartlett Doctoral Informality Network convened an international workshop inviting three established scholars from around the world to engage with doctoral students from across the Faculty. Dr Nikhilesh Sinha (DPU) with Dr Nerea Amorós-Elorduy (The Bartlett School of Architecture) who were doctoral students at the time took on the process of editing a collection and invited Prof. Colin Marx to join them.

Published as part of UCL's Fringe Series, the book 'Urban Informality and the Built Environment' demonstrates the value of greater and more diverse forms of engagement of built environment disciplines in what constitutes urban informality and its politics. It brings a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of informality and the built environment in diverse contexts, drawing on recent research by architects, planners, political scientists, geographers and urban theorists.

Prof. Christoph Lindner, Dean of The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment said: “Working expertly across multiple disciplines and diverse geographies, this timely collection of essays shows why informality matters in our cities and how it shapes - and has the potential to reshape - everyday urban realities in profound ways."
