Now Launching: The DPU70 Scholarships

30 November 2023

The DPU70 Scholarships have now launched. This scheme will support two students from Sub-Saharan Africa to study DPU Master’s courses in the 2024-25 academic year.

The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) conducts world-leading research and postgraduate teaching that helps to build the capacity of national governments, local authorities, NGOs, aid agencies and businesses working towards socially just and sustainable development in the global south. In 2024, we celebrate 70 years since our establishment.

As part of a series of interconnected activities that look both forwards and backwards to our origins in 1954, the DPU70 celebration will examine the most prominent contemporary challenges facing cities, planning and international development, and to kick that process off, we are proud to launch the DPU70 Scholarships. Available for the 2024-25 academic year only, two students from Sub-Saharan Africa studying Master’s courses at The Bartlett Development Planning Unit will receive an award covering full overseas tuition fees, plus an annual allowance of £16,000 to cover living and study expenses for the normal duration of the programme at UCL. The value of the scholarship will also include a flight to/from the UK, UK Study Visa costs, English language assessment costs, health test costs and the NHS Immigration Health Supplement charge.

The DPU has had many long and vital partnerships with colleagues on the African continent. Indeed, those relationships extend to the very origins of the DPU and underpin much of our work. Yet we work in an educational context in which the programmes we offer are financially beyond the reach of many international partners, and disproportionately so with regard to those based in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, the DPU70 Scholarships are intended to go some small way to helping to support the collaborations that are so fundamental to us all."

- Professor Michael Walls, Director of The Bartlett Development Planning Unit

The DPU70 Scholarships are funded by The Bartlett Development Planning Unit and powered by The Bartlett Promise Scholarship. Therefore, scholars holding one of the DPU70 Scholarships, will also have access to resources available through The Bartlett Promise Scholarship scheme. All Promise scholars receive on-going academic and career support during their study.

Applications for the DPU70 Scholarships will open on 15 February 2024 with a deadline for prospective scholars to submit their applications by 3 April 2024.
