Alongside project partner, Catalytic Action, the research team returned two years on to ask residents and citizen scientists about the impact of the Participatory Spatial Intervention project, and produced a supplementary short video output.

The film shows the long term impacts of participatory design and how it  empowers communities and addresses social cohesion in contexts affected by displacement. The video discusses the impact of the Participatory Spatial Intervention led by Dr Andrea Rigon in 2019. This is a built project in Lebanon where participatory design methods were adopted to address vulnerabilities through the implementation of a spatial intervention in a city that hosts a large number of refugees from Syria.

The film was produced to promote the importance of participatory design and highlight its capacity to empower vulnerable communities, including children affected by displacement. The film also stresses how participatory design has the capacity to foster social cohesion between host and refugee community.

This is the last video of a documentary trilogy. The first video showcases the participatory design process and the second video documents the different built elements.

  • The key lessons that can be drawn from the film are that participatory design can:
  • Empower communities and have a lasting positive impact;
  • Improve social cohesion, inclusion, social capital, and integration between refugee and host communities, and within the refugee community;
  • Have a positive impact on the local economy, build capacity and provide employment; and
  • Deliver better social infrastructures.
