20 July 2017
Papers and outputs from the DPU hosted 7th International i-Rec Conference "Reconstruction and Recovery in Urban Contexts" in 2015 have now been published on the i-rec website. The conference proceedings and other materials on this website are an excellent online resource for scholars and practitioners working on post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.
The 2015 conference looked specifically at urban issues, touching on how disasters and crises are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity in urban areas and that crises occurring in the urban context pose particular challenges for recovery and reconstruction, due in part to intense social inequalities, complex infrastructure and governance systems, competing agendas for access to land, density of the built environment and the numbers of people affected. The conference highlighted that cities can be seen as both part of the cause that create the crisis, and also part of the solution.
The biannual conference hosted by the DPU in 2015 the was attended by over 120 participants. It was organized around 5 plenary sessions and 14 roundtables.
