Welcome to visiting professors appointed for the DPU

We are delighted to welcome professors Susan Parnell and David Satterthwaite to their most recent appointments as DPU visiting professors.

Prof Susan Parnell from the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences and the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town is also visiting the Geography Department as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor. She will be presenting a Leverhulme public lecture later in the term as well as undertaking some teaching and other public lectures in the Geography Department and at the DPU. Included in this is the current lectures and a panel for the Dialogues in Development series on African perspectives on urban development planning.

Prof Parnell will also be working with Prof Jenny Robinson in the context of the Urban Laboratory to support international urban teaching and research at UCL. She will also be travelling to Manchester and Edinburgh to present Leverhulme public lectures and build links between UCL, UCT and urban groupings in those Universities.

Prof David Satterthwaite is a Senior Fellow with the Human Settlements Group at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).  He has been a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1998, editor of the international journal Environment and Urbanization and co-author or editor of several Earthscan books including Squatter Citizen (with Jorge E. Hardoy, 1989), The Earthscan Reader in Sustainable Cities (1998), Environmental Problems in an Urbanizing World (with Jorge E. Hardoy & Diana Mitlin, 2000) and Adapting Cities to Climate Change (with Jane Bicknell and David Dodman, 2009).  He advises many international agencies on urban and environmental policy, and in 2004, he was awarded the Volvo Environment Prize.
