Dr Yossef Ben-Meir, President of the High Atlas Foundation (HAF), will share about their experiences providing relief and rebuilding support with rural communities impacted by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8, 2023. The earthquake took the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured more than 5,600 in the High Atlas Mountains. Dr. Ben-Meir will speak about approaches for effective delivery of assistance, qualities of productive and national and global partnerships, and the basis for rebuilding that is provided by psychosocial empowerment to address trauma.
Lessons learned will be highlighted related to the provision of essential supplies (food, warm clothing, blankets, school supplies, solar lamps, and tents), implementing water system projects for drinking and irrigation, providing immediate and intermediate housing, and methodologies for psychosocial healing and creating a vision for the future. To date, HAF has distributed 381,000 tons of supplies with more than 20,000 families (220 villages) located in 50+ municipalities (five provinces).
