Despite economic growth lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, finding somewhere decent and affordable to live is proving increasingly difficult in urban areas throughout the world. Geoffrey Payne's new book demonstrates that this is the inevitable outcome of neoliberal economics that have concentrated wealth and power in the hands of a small global elite.

somewhere to live

Payne provides an analysis of the ways in which urban land and housing have become a physical manifestation of increasing inequality and a failure to address the climate crisis. They can therefore be part of the solution. The book provides numerous examples of innovative approaches, based upon five decades of international research and consultancy, showing how to create urban areas that are socially equitable, economically efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Payne’s book provides the materials for non-technical readers to campaign for the changes needed and for policymakers to implement them.

In the context of increasing urban housing and land inequalities, his book builds on five decades of international research and consultancy, to show how to create urban areas that are socially equitable, economically efficient and environmentally sustainable.

After providing a background to the book, Geoff will be joined by Ruth Mcleod and Billy Cobbett who will offer commentaries on the book. The audience will then be invited to join the discussion around campaigning for the changes needed.
