Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the hardest hit regions with the pandemic in the world. The most vulnerable population inhabits barrios populares where more than 100 million people live in precarious housing conditions while only 11 of the 33 countries in the region have laws on urban development and land use planning.. This event will present the Decalogue for Participatory Slum Upgrading that defines a road map for action in the region. In dialogue with the key members of the inter-organisational coalition, the challenges for slum upgrading and opportunities will be discussed. The discussants will address why the most expeditious strategy to capitalize on the immediate response and contribute to the long-term post-pandemic recovery is to generate a regional intersectoral alliance that promotes a renewed program for the slum upgrading of healthy neighbourhoods.
