Before joining CASA, Yongping Zhang has obtained three master degrees: one in European Spatial Planning and Environmental Policy from Cardiff University (the UK), one in Social and Political Sciences of Environment from Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands), and one in Urban and Regional Planning from Peking University (China). He obtained his bachelor degree in Geographical Information System from Wuhan University (China). 

His research interests are urban modelling, spatial analysis using urban big data, and Chinese urbanization.
