CASA helps launch the new Knowledge Quarter

5 December 2014

George Osborne interacting with the CASA London Data Table

On Thursday 4th December, CASA Teaching Fellow in Big Data Analytics, Steven Gray, met the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, at the launch of the Alan Turning Institute for Data Science. The new Institute for Data Science will be based at the British Library at the center of a new Knowledge Quarter. CASA was invited to showcase some of the visualisations created by researchers in our lab on our London Data Table, a table the shape of London that projects real-time animations and visualisations of data that tell compelling stories on how we use our city.

UCL has partnered with 34 academic, cultural, research, scientific and media organisations based in Kings Cross, Euston and Bloomsbury to form the Knowledge Quarter.  Data Science is a staple of CASA's research into the Smart City and we were very proud to be part of the launch event of a bigger investment into data science within UK academia.

You can see the London Data Table for yourself at the "Smarter London" exhibition at the NLA on Store Street until the 19th December.
