Elizabeth Dow Honoured at the UCL Education Awards 2021

25 June 2021

The AIS Programme Director's exceptional commitment to pastoral care was recognised in the “Academic Support” category.

The awards celebrate the commitment and excellence of teaching and support staff across the UCL landscape, and are organised in two subdivisions. The Student Choice Awards are voted on by students, and the UCL Provost Education Awards are awarded to exceptional teams and individuals who make outstanding contributions to students’ learning experience.

Elizabeth is an Associate Professor and Senior Departmental Tutor at The Bartlett, and leads the Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies BSc as Programme Director. She was nominated in the Provost Awards division, and named the winner in the Academic Support category for “spearheading substantial change in support of students through a new personal tutoring structure”.

The Provost commented on Elizabeth’s contribution to the school and the experience of its students:

Central to Elizabeth’s success in implementing change is her evident integrity and commitment to fairness. As our Senior Department Tutor, overseeing a team of 12 Departmental Tutors and over 100 personal tutors (of whom 40 are attached to the scheme that changed), she sets the benchmark for all others.

She is deeply admired, trusted, and respected by staff and students, and is our lead standard-bearer for student pastoral care. The Bartlett School of Architecture has changed in many ways over the past five years, and one of the most important and significant of those changes has been the transformations outlined here.

Elizabeth is far too modest to expect recognition of this kind; it is the last thing she seeks, as her priorities are always focused on student need, and being available for that next call or email that could arrive at any time from someone seeking her support. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude for not only doing her job so well, but for changing something so vital to the school’s health and its priorities.”

- Dr Michael Spence, President and Provost, UCL

To be nominated for, let alone be awarded a UCL Education award has come as an almighty surprise. Nonetheless, it is a huge honour and a privilege to receive this on behalf of The Bartlett Faculty and School of Architecture, to ensure we can continue to develop our discipline-led and programme-tailored approach to personal and departmental tutoring, in support of our diverse, unique and amazing student cohorts."
