As part of this translation collaboration with the V&A, students have translated academic articles on indigenous American lacquer coatings between Spanish to English under the supervision of Dr Olivia Cockburn. The research for these articles was presented at the “Lacquer in the Americas” conference held at the V&A in April 2023. Researchers from Spain, Brazil, Mexico and the UK attended, and the students’ translations have been pivotal in the exchange of knowledge between scholars in this field.
The students will be referenced as translators in the published acts and were rewarded for their hard work with a private tour of the V&A on 3rd July, where they were shown some of the artefacts featured in the articles they translated.
This has been a fantastic opportunity to gain professional translation experience for these CenTraS’ translation students and we are sure it will be the first of many collaborations with the V&A.
