Alejandra Escobar Bravo

Alejandra Escobar Bravo is an International Relations of the Americas MSc student (2018/19). Here she tells us about her fieldwork trip to Bogotá, Colombia.

Thanks to the UCL Travel Scholarship, I was able to travel to Bogotá, Colombia, to do my dissertation fieldwork, a key element for my study. My research aimed to study the link between corruption and human rights in the local context of Colombia.

During a month I had the chance to interview key government officials and NGOs representatives that worked in the implementation of anti-corruption mechanisms, helping me to better understand the challenges of dealing with corruption in the country and the different links of corruption with human rights issues. The experience of being on the field was a key element for my dissertation as getting access to high-level officials through Skype would have been extremely difficult, limiting my access to crucial insights for my research. Thankfully, I had the chance to interview high-level officials in person, giving me the chance to elaborate on current policy issues.
