Love experiences and expectations of men and women in Santiago de Chile (1880-1940)

Supervisor:

Professor Paulo Drinot

My research focuses on love practices, representations, and experiences of Chilean citizens between the years 1880 and 1940 in the city of Santiago. I am mainly interested in their emotions and private lives to understand how the emotional bond was built socially. Some of the questions that guide my research project are: How did the State regulate love; How did people describe the couple's love; What practices seem relevant to them as symbols of affective commitment; Among others.

I chose this period because in 1884, in Chile, lay laws were enacted. The State replaced the Catholic Church's role and began to regulate intimate relationships such as marriage, divorce, birth and death. This process of secularization impacted the private lives of citizens in different ways and how people understood their love relationships.
