Kenneth Sanchez article on Venezuelan refugees in Peru shortlisted for Amnesty International award
27 April 2020
'Escaping the Chaos', a digital story-telling project by Kenneth Sanchez (UCL Americas), portrays the harrowing journey and choices that thousands of Venezuelans have to face in their quest for safety and opportunities as they flee poverty and violence in their own country.
Millions of Venezuelans have been forced to leave their home country. Many have found refuge 2,000 miles away, in Peru. These two countries do not share a border yet Peru's capital city, Lima, has become a safe haven for the vast majority of this diaspora.
Escaping the Chaos is Kenneth's final-year journalistic investigation as an undergraduate at the University of Kent. This piece has already garnered two major accolades: the Unicorn Training Student - NMWP New Media Writing Prize (as well as becoming finalist in the NMWP Future Journalism Award), and the Best Education Story - Shorthand Award. It has also been shortlisted for the Amnesty International UK Media Student Journalism Award, whose winner will be announced on September 30, 2020. Read Kenneth's complete article here.
