About the UCL Institute of the Americas

"All the staff here at the Institute are committed and have chosen to work in a department that is committed to area studies. This means that whether we are historians or political scientists, or anthropologists, or we work in international relations or in human rights, we're all fundamentally interested in the Americas as a region."

The UCL Institute of the Americas was established in July 2012, as part of the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences. We are a leading multidisciplinary specialist institution for the study of Latin America, the United States, the Caribbean and Canada, and act as a focal point in the UK for students and researchers seeking to develop in-depth regional and continental knowledge of the Americas.

We offer the largest teaching portfolio on the Americas in the UK, specialising in social sciences and modern history. The Institute offers four taught postgraduate degrees, specialist supervision to doctoral level, and new undergraduate degree programmes which include the exciting opportunity to study abroad.

As a student at the UCL Institute of the Americas, you will be taught by world-leading scholars at the cutting edge of research in the humanities and social sciences. We provide and encourage comparative and interdisciplinary debate on the Americas that will enable you to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the most recent scholarship on the region.

The Institute also runs a series of free events to support our teaching and research. We work with colleagues at UCL and globally to promote cutting-edge research, teaching and public policy debate on the Americas.
