The Institute of the Americas at UCL is organising a roundtable discussion to analyse the current political crisis in Peru. The discussion will focus on the situation of human rights, the nature and prospects of the emerging popular mobilizations, and the conditions that would allow a resolution of the crisis. The panel gathers a selected group of Peruvian scholars and activists, and it will be chaired by Enrique Castañón Ballivián, Lecturer in International Development at the Institute of the Americas, University College London.

ES | El Instituto de las Américas de University College London (UCL) está organizando una mesa redonda para analizar la crisis política en el Perú. La discusión se centrará en la situación de los Derechos Humanos, la naturaleza y los prospectos de las movilizaciones populares, y las condiciones que podrían permitir una resolución de la crisis. El panel está conformado por un grupo selecto de personas ligadas a la academia y el activismo.

Moderador: Enrique Castañón Ballivián - docente investigador en Desarrollo Internacional del Instituto de las Américas, University College London (UCL).

Mariela Noles Cotito

Mariela Noles Cotito
EN | Professor of Political Science, and of Discrimination and Public Policy at Universidad del Pacifico, in Lima, Peru. Her research agenda includes topics of gender equality, social inclusion policies in Peru, and how the intersection of different systems of oppression positions different groups of people outside of the scope of legal protection. Most recently she is focused on exploring the effectiveness of ethnoracial legislation to promote and protect the rights of Afrodescendants in Peru. She holds a Law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania, and two MA degrees in Latin American Studies and Political Science from the University of South Florida.

ES | Profesora de Ciencia Política, y Discriminación y Políticas Públicas en la Universidad del Pacífico, Perú Es abogada por la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú; máster en Derecho por la University of Pennsylvania; máster en Estudios Latinoamericanos y máster en Ciencia Política, con una concentración en Etnicidad en Países Andinos, por la University of South Florida. Su portafolio de investigación incluye temas de derechos humanos, igualdad de género y no discriminación, así como el análisis de políticas públicas de inclusión en el país.

 

Marco Avilés

Marco Aviles
EN | Journalist and author of the books Día de visita, De dónde venimos los cholos and No soy tu cholo. He is currently a PhD candidate in Literature at the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches bilingual journalism at the City University of New York. He contributes to different media outlets such as El País, Granta, Washington Post, Radio Ambulante, Vice, Salud con Lupa and NUSO.

Indira Huilca Flores

Indira Huilca
EN | Indira Huilca Flores holds a sociology degree from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and is currently completing a Master's degree in Political Science and Government at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She is a former member of the Peruvian national congress representing Lima from 2016-2020. She was part of several congressional commissions including the Comisión de la Mujer y Familia, the Comisión de Trabajo y Seguridad Social and the Comisión de Justicia y Derechos Humanos.

ES | Indira Huilca Flores es socióloga por la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos y actualmente cursa una Maestría en Ciencias Políticas y Gobierno en la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Es ex Congresista de la República, representante por Lima entre los años 2016-2020. Fue presidenta de la Comisión de la Mujer y Familia del Congreso entre los años 2016-2017. Integró como titular la Comisión de Trabajo y Seguridad Social y la Comisión de Justicia y Derechos Humanos.

Elwin Huaman

Elwin Huaman
EN | Elwin Huaman was born in Nuñoa, a town situated at 4100 masl in the Puno region, southeastern Peru. He is a quechua activist that leads various projects and initiatives to promote endangered languages. Currently, he manages the projects Qichwabase and WikiAndes.

ES | Elwin Huaman procede de Nuñoa, un pueblo a 4100 msnm en la región de Puno (Perú), es un activista quechua que dirige varios proyectos, talleres y presentaciones relacionados con las lenguas con pocos recursos y en peligro de extinción. Actualmente, dirige los proyectos Qichwabase y WikiAndes, orientados a desarrollar y afianzar competencias del siglo XXI para todos.

Mercedes Crisóstomo

Mercedes Crisostomo
EN | Mercedes Crisóstomo is an anthropologist and researcher with expertise in violence, gender, memory, armed conflict and social movements. She has conducted extensive ethnographic work in rural Peru.

ES | Mercedes Crisóstomo es antropóloga e investigadora especializada en temas sobre violencia, género y memoria, conflicto armado interno y movimientos sociales, con amplia experiencia etnográfica en las zonas rurales del Perú.
