UCL joins ELLIS network

14 September 2020

We are proud to announce that UCL, a global leader in AI and machine learning, will be joining the ELLIS network today with a new ELLIS Unit.

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is officially launching its 30 ELLIS research units on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

We are proud to announce that UCL, a global leader in AI and machine learning, will be joining the ELLIS network today with a new ELLIS Unit.

ELLIS is a European AI network of excellence comprising Units within 30 Universities. It focuses on fundamental science, technical innovation and societal impact. Modern Artificial Intelligence technologies are based on machine learning. Like human intelligence, learning machines do not have to be explicitly programmed, but can learn from experience. Many fundamental ideas in this field were developed in Europe or by European researchers. However, Europe is now facing challenges when it comes to attracting and retaining the best talent. ELLIS is a grassroots initiative that addresses these challenges with a strategy to maintain and foster European technological sovereignty in this competitive field.

The ELLIS Unit at UCL spans across multiple departments (Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, Department of Computer Science, Department of Statistics) and includes 29 faculty across the three departments.

UCL will join the ELLIS PhD program, a flagship initiative, where PhD students are fully funded and jointly supervised by top AI research groups throughout Europe. The ELLIS PhD program is open to applicants worldwide.
