'AI Insights' Series

The AI Centre is pleased to announce the introduction of a new ‘AI Insights’ event series. Taking place monthly, the series will focus on a range of pertinent topics and discussion areas in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Each event will provide detailed insight into a different market vertical or application of AI technologies, and will incorporate the views of several leading industry experts. All of the events will be streamed live on the Centre’s YouTube channel, with the opportunity for viewers to put their questions to the panel at the end of each live session. 

The first event in the series is entitled 'Adoption of AI in Financial Services' and will take place on Thursday 20th August at 1pm. 

Speaking ahead of the first ‘AI Insights’ event, series organiser, Emre Kazim, a Research Fellow in UCL’s AI Centre said: “in this series we will focus on vibrant debates and areas at the current interface between academic research and AI in industry – the focus will be on tangible outputs and scientifically informed insights on the deployment of AI in business and society.”


Inaugural Event Details: 'Adoption of AI in Financial Services'

Overview: Join us as Ana Perales (AI and Conception X Lead, Director, Barclays Ventures), Dr Lukasz Szpruch (Reader - University of Edinburgh, The Alan Turing Institute) and Lara Macdonald (Senior Policy Advisor, Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation) provide their insight into the future adoption and delivery of artificial intelligence in the financial services industry. The event will be chaired by Adriano Soares Koshiyama (Research Fellow, UCL Computer Science). An opportunity for audience questions will be provided at the end of the session.

Speaker Overviews: 

Chair – Adriano Soares Koshiyama
Adriano Koshiyama is a Research Fellow in Computer Science at University College London. His research interests include Machine Learning, Finance, and Algorithmic Assessment. He is a specialist in designing trustworthy autonomous systems.

Speaker – Ana Perales, AI and Conception X Lead, Director, Barclays Ventures
Ana Perales is the AI and Conception X lead in Barclays Ventures, a team created in 2018 focused on developing new business lines, promoting innovation and driving returns within Barclays. Ana started her career in strategy consulting after completing a PhD in organisational strategy. She joined Barclays in 2003 working on a number of roles, from operations to product development.
Since 2016, her focus has been on exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence for business, the economy and society as a whole. Ana runs a team focussed on upskilling, inspiring and connecting colleagues, people and communities on the current and potential applications of AI as well as governance considerations. She is part of the Barclays Centre of Enablement for Data Science and advises Ventures on AI related governance aspects. In addition, Ana is part of the Conception X Board, a venture builder that creates early stage deep tech start-ups from PhD students in leading universities.

Speaker – Lukasz Szpruch, University of Edinburgh/ The Alan Turing Institute 
Lukasz is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. He is also the director of Finance and Economics programme at The Alan Turing Institute, London. Previously Lukasz was a Nomura Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Mathematics, University of Oxford, and a member of the Oxford-Man Institute for Quantitative Finance. Lukasz has a broad research interest in Machine and Reinforcement Learning, Statistics and Game Theory. 

Speaker – Lara Macdonald, Senior Policy Advisor, Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI)
Lara is a Senior Policy Advisor at the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI). The CDEI is an advisory body set up by the UK Government and led by an independent board of expert members to investigate and advise on how we maximise the benefits of data-driven technologies, including artificial intelligence. At CDEI, Lara has worked on a review into algorithmic bias across four sectors, including financial services, which will be published in late August. 

 


UCL 'AI Insights' series event - Bias in Artificial Intelligence (Live on YouTube)

Date: Thursday 24th September, 1pm.

Location: The event will be streamed live on the AI Centre’s YouTube channel

Prof. Emine Yilmaz (Computer Science, UCL) and Dr. Franziska Leutner (HireVue) will provide their insight into the pressing area of fairness in and when using automated systems.* The event will be chaired by Adriano Soares Koshiyama (Research Fellow, UCL Computer Science).

An opportunity for audience questions will be provided at the end of the session.

Speaker Overviews:

Speaker – Prof. Emine Yilmaz (Computer Science, UCL)

Emine is a Professor and Turing Fellow at University College London, Department of Computer Science. She also works as an Amazon Scholar for Amazon. Her research interests lie in the areas of information retrieval, data mining, and applications of machine learning, probability and statistics.

Speaker – Dr. Franziska Leutner (HireVue)

Dr. Kiki Leutner is a business psychologist and Data Scientist at University College London (UCL). She is Director of Assessment Innovation at HireVue, where she develops innovative, data driven assessments that are fair and psychometrically valid. Her academic work is published in peer reviewed journals, including work on the intersection of machine learning and psychometrics. She is an expert in innovative psychometric assessment, personality theory, and behavioral analytics.

Chair – Adriano Soares Koshiyama

Adriano Koshiyama is a Research Fellow in Computer Science at University College London. His research interests include Machine Learning, Finance, and Algorithmic Assessment. He is a specialist in designing trustworthy autonomous systems.
