career management

When managing your next career move, either when moving into a new job and / or job sector, or when considering new opportunities with your current employer, using the career management cycle below can break up this process into a series of logical steps that can increase your chances of a successful outcome.

The Career management Cycle:

S: Self Knowledge - Make sure you know what you want from a career and what you have to offer.

O: Option Generation - Boosting your Knowledge of jobs and getting ideas of what might suit

R: Researching + Exploring - Finding out what you need to know about your career options

T: Taking Decisions - Working out how to choose between your various options

I: Implementing & Self marketing - looking for jobs or courses and making applications

T: Transition Management - Dealing with Offers and settling into your new Situation.

Many people carry out the above cycle sequentially, starting with Self Knowledge, moving onto options generation and research, then narrowing down their options by referring back to what they learnt about their needs during the self analysis stage, before moving on the the practical steps of implementing & self marketing. More information on each of these steps can be found at SORTIT (please note: SORTIT has been designed primarily for undergraduates but still has many elements useful to research staff)
