Industrial Action: Notice for Students
From: Tim Perry, Registrar
The Universities and Colleges Union (UCU), Unison and Unite unions have notified UCL that their members will be taking strike action on Tuesday 3 December 2013. The action is in light of a dispute relating to the failure to agree the nationally-negotiated 2013 pay rise for staff. These negotiations are led by the Universities and Colleges Employers Association on behalf of Higher Education Institutions.
This day of action follows previous industrial action taken on 31 October this year, in which 3.9% of all UCL staff participated. There was minimal disruption to normal services on 31 October. On that basis, UCL hopes and expects that there will not be significant disruption on 3 December either. Nevertheless, the decision to take strike action is a matter for individual members of UCU, Unison and Unite.
UCL will be open as usual on 3 December. If there are changes to normal operations, including to lectures or tutorials scheduled for that day, notices should be placed by the academic departments concerned on departmental webpages or via local SMS messages, in accordance with the usual local arrangements for communicating with students. Students should therefore contact their department if they have any queries regarding arrangements on 3 December.
