Meet the Digital Education Team
The Digital Education Team are based within Information Services Division (ISD) and provide support, advice and training for all aspects of Learning Technology, e-learning and distance learning across the whole of UCL.
Meet the team
Fiona Strawbridge has managed e-learning support at UCL since its inception. She has seen the service grow from three people supporting a handful of courses in the old Learning Technology Support Service in 2003 to the current extended structure which now includes school-facing support, distance learning, digital skills development, innovations and evaluation, and learning spaces support. As well as running the Digital Education group, she is ISD's Education Domain lead, overseeing the portfolio of education-related IT projects.
Fiona joined UCL in 2000 when she was responsible for IT training. Before joining UCL Fiona lectured in remote sensing and geographic information systems at Bath Spa University following a stint as a post-doc at UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory.
- Digital Education Services
The Digital Education Services team is led by Jason Norton. They are responsible for managing UCL Learning Technology core services, end-user support and the central training programme.
E-Learning Services Manager
Jason is the core services team leader and service owner for all of our core e-learning services. His interests lie in Digital Anthropology, the use of online virtual worlds and the gamification of learning.
Rod works with the Digital Education Services team supporting and advising on the use of Lecturecast, Moodle, Electronic Voting, Opinio and a range of other technologies employed in teaching and learning.
Learning Technology Officer
Fiona joined the Digital Education Services team in December 2011, and works with Zaman in acting as the first point of contact for all e-learning enquiries.
Learning Technology Officer
Zaman has been working in various departments of ISD since 2008, joining the Digital Education Services team in 2012 to provide E-Learning training and support. He is currently supporting the public e-learning platform, UCL Extend.
Learning Technology Officer
Karen joined the team in December 2016 from the University of Roehampton . She supports and advises on the use of a range of technologies including Moodle, Turnitin and MyPortfolio. From February 2017 she will act as service lead for the latter two.
Professional interests include student motivation and engagement, e-assessment, (including peer and ipsative assessment and feedback data analysis) Also and improving the usability of, and productivity gains from learning technologies.
A fellow of the HEA and previously a lecturer in Management Information Systems at the University of the West Indies, she has taught undergraduates in both face-to-face and distance modes. Acknowledging that learning technologies may not be able to compete with the "pulling power" of an academic's infectious enthusiasm for their subject to motivate students, she is confident that used strategically, they can disrupt and transform both learning and teaching in HE. Hence, Karen is keen to work with UCL academics and colleagues to prove it.
Distance Learning Facilitator
Jo joined UCL Digital Education in 2017, having previously held learning technology positions at both research intensive and teaching-focused higher education institutions across the UK.
As Distance Learning Facilitator she has a cross-institutional focus on online and distance learning in many forms, providing guidance relating to online pedagogies and learning design. She also manages the public-facing learning environment UCLeXtend and UCL’s relationship with MOOC provider FutureLearn. She is a Fellow of the HEA and CMALT assessor with experience of teaching at undergraduate level. Her primary interests in the field of digital education are, as you might expect, fully online delivery, global and development education, assessment and feedback, and open educational practices.
- Digital Education Advisory
The Digital Education Advisory team is led by Clive Young. They are responsible for supporting and disseminating good practice through school-facing facilitators who work closely with CALT colleagues. This includes running local events and staff development activities. The team also includes a distance learning facilitator.
Digital Education Advisory Team Leader
Clive has worked as a learning technology consultant in several universities, most recently with Imperial College London. He has led several UK and international projects on the pedagogic design of video and was an e-learning project evaluator for the European Commission. Clive is also an associate lecturer at the Open University tutoring on their MA in Online and Distance Education.
Digital Education Advisor (BEAMS)
Jessica is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with a background in web development and has been working to support the use of technology in educational institutions since 2004. Her interests centre around e-assessment, accessibility, digital scholarship and learning analytics. Recent projects she has worked on include initiating development of the Moodle MyFeedback report, leading the development of UCL's E-Learning Baseline and helping to establish the UCL E-Learning Champions' Network and UCL Student Blog.
Jessica works with departments across the Built Environment, Engineering and Mathematical and Physical Sciences to improve their use of e-learning and co-manages three Learning Technologists within the Engineering faculty.
Digital Education Advisor (SLASH)
Mira is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with a broad background in e-learning and academic development. Her interests are wide-ranging including all kinds of group work from Wikipedia to discussion forums, peer feedback, large groups, note-taking, and multimodal communications. She has carried out a number of UK digital education projects and has taught at undergraduate level. Her UCL-wide work includes the Assessment Review, work on the Arena programmes, and on Connected Curriculum Working Groups.
Mira particularly works with Arts & Humanities, Laws, Social & Historical Sciences and the School of Slavonic & East European Studies. Her 2016-17 Connected Curriculum secondment to CALT will explore UCL's practices with multimodal assessment.
Digital Education Advisor (SLMS)
Nataša has been working on e-learning development in medical, nursing and allied health sciences in higher education since 2006. Particular interests: blended learning, open educational resources, online videos in medical education, digital literacies and instructional design.
Nataša has a background in science, web development and teaching.
Nataša works with the School of Life and Medical Sciences Faculties (Brain Sciences, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences an population Health Sciences).
Learning Technologies Unit Lead (IOE)
Tim has worked as a learning technology consultant in further education and remote organisational learning contexts before joining the IOE in 2005. He has since been involved in several UK and international research and consultancy projects on e-assessment, online collaboration and academic development. Tim has a background as a media producer with special expertise in large scale events and mass participation, and his particular interests are web conferencing, communication and online pedagogy.
Tim works at the Institute of Education on enhancing online and blended learning practices, and he teaches fully online on IOE postgraduate programmes.

The Digital Education Developments team is led by Steve Rowett. They are responsible for horizon scanning, trialling and evaluating new technologies and pedagogies, as well as designing and evaluating technology-enhanced physical learning spaces.

Steve has worked in learning technologies for a number of years, most recently at the University of Surrey. He has particular experience in supporting staff designing activities for blended learning programmes and in e-portfolios and personal response (also called electronic voting) systems. He is also an online tutor at the University of Hull.
Learning Spaces Specialist

Paul joined UCL in September 2012. His role focuses on learning space design and use. Prior to UCL Paul worked for nine years at the University of Surrey as a Senior Learning and Technology Adviser and has worked in post-school education since 1991.

Janina joined Digital Education Developments in December 2012. Her role involves horizon scanning and trialling new technologies for learning and teaching, including open badges, social media, gamification, augmented reality and anything else that emerges.
Digital Project Officer

Samantha joined UCL in January 2013.
She is a qualified teacher and spent a number of years teaching ICT at Secondary level including ‘A’ level. In addition, Samantha is an Associate Fellow of the HEA. Her areas of expertise are data analysis; incorporating database design & development, statistical computing and data cleaning, and programming (R, MatLab, HTML/CSS, Python). Samantha was featured in the BCS 2015 Women in IT campaign (http://www.bcs.org/category/18462) and is currently on secondment to the Information Security Group. In November 2015 obtained MSc Intelligent Systems.
- Faculty/Department Learning Technologists
There are a number of Learning Technologists based in faculties and departments that are co-managed by the E-Learning Facilitator for their corresponding school. They are responsible for supporting and disseminating good practice within their faculty / department. This includes managing projects, running local workshops and supporting staff.
Faculty of Population Health Sciences
With a background in skilled manual labour, construction management, educational awarding bodies, charities, the Arts, corporate enterprise and entrepreneurship, information technology, e-learning and instructional design, you can basically ask him questions on anything, and even if he doesn't know the answers, he will always be polite, wise and often humorous in his response.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP)
Alan is based in Department of Science Technology Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP) and supports the department by designing and developing online, blended, and face-to-face courses for multi-channel learners. In addition to the department's education programmes, Alan also supports 'How to Change the World' as part of UCL Global Citizenship Programme that brings undergraduate engineering students together from all disciplines to address some of the toughest of global problems. Alan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and he is also a qualified librarian, graphic designer and project manager.
Faculty of Engineering
Matt works as the learning technologist for UCL's Faculty of Engineering. Matt is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and is currently studying for a Masters in Education and Technology at the UCL Institute of Education. Matt has a particular interest in the use of scenarios for teaching and learning, in particular how they can be used to effectively facilitate flipped and blended learning. In his spare works on projects, which focus on ways technology may be used for public education and social activism.
UCL School of Maagement
Tom is the Learning Technologist based within the UCL School of Management. Tom is responsible for creating, maintaining and enhancing, the School's e Learning platform and to provide e-learning training and support for academic and professional services colleagues in the department. Tom has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in higher Education and currently studying on the MA in Education and Technology at the UCL Institute if Education. Matteo Fumagalli
Deputy Education Manager
UCL Institute of Neurology
Matteo supports the organisation of the Clinical Neuroscience, Clinical Neurology and Brain & Mind Sciences programmes for which he is the first point of contact for students as well as liaising with academics; Matteo's efforts are geared towards offering a great learning experience to MSc students and ensuring high quality standards on these programmes. His role also entails supporting all MSc programmes at the Institute of Neurology from an administrative and pedagogical point of view, keeping consistent what we offer students across teaching, assessment and learning resources.
Matteo's background is in Education Sciences and in the last few years he has developed a keen interest in using learning technologies in university. He has taken part in numerous projects where the use of learning technologies helped enhancing teaching practice for academics as well as the student learning experience. Matteo was recently been awarded the Certified Membership of the Association for Learning Technology and the Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
- Digital Skills Development
The Digital Skills Development team is led by Caroline Norris. The team provides training and support to students and staff in the development of digital capabilities.
Digital Skills Development Manager
Caroline has been involved in 'IT Training' for over a decade at UCL and set up and ran the Open Learning Centre, managed the European Computer Driving Licence programme and has overseen both staff and student IT training programmes over the years. She currently manages the Digital Skills Development team which provided training and support for both staff and students to develop their digital capabilities to meet their personal, professional and academic needs. The focus of the team has mostly been on supporting people in their use of desktop applications but they are now widening their focus to include a broader range of digital capabilities and are increasingly exploring new ways of delivering content through online and blended courses and student-facilitated workshops
As well as managing the work of the team, Caroline also takes a lead on digital capabilities provision at UCL and is responsible for Lynda.com which offers a wide range of video tutorials in creative, business and technical skills. Caroline has a particular interest in employability and the neuroscience of learning.

Jasmin joined the team in January 2017 as a Digital Education Administrator, splitting her time between dealing with administration for Digital Skills Development training courses and supporting the public-facing learning environment, UCLeXtend.

Digital Literacy Officer
Moira joined UCL in 2007 working for UCL Centre for Advancing Learning and Teaching (CALT) and moved to Digital Education in 2014. Previous experience in HR, recruitment and business consulting with employers from Blue Chip to start-ups on business services for high tech companies. Moira has a focused interest in student digital and information literacy skills for employability.
