Meet the Digital Education Team

The Digital Education Team are based within ISD and provide support, advice and training for all aspects of Learning Technology, e-learning and distance learning across the whole of UCL.

Fiona Strawbridge

Director of Digital Education

Fiona Strawbridge…

Fiona has managed the Digital Education team at UCL since its inception. Since 2003, she has seen the activity grow from where there were just three people supporting a handful of courses in what was known as the Learning Technology Support Service, to the current extended structure which now includes school-facing support, online learning, media production, digital skills development, innovation, evaluation and more recently, digital accessibility. As well as running the Digital Education group, she is the ISD Education Domain lead, overseeing the UCL portfolio of education-related IT product teams and their initiatives.

Fiona joined UCL in 2000 when she was responsible for IT training. Before joining UCL Fiona lectured in remote sensing and geographic information systems at Bath Spa University following a stint as a post-doc at UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory. 

Digital Education VLE

The Digital Education VLE team is led by Jason Norton.  They are responsible for managing the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment, and integrations with other services.

Jason joined UCL in 2004 and joined the precursor Digital Education team in 2008. Jason is the Digital Education Services Manager responsible for the core digital education systems/service Moodle. He manages the Digital Education Core service team that provides centrally provisioned second line application and pedagogic support for our tools and practice.

Jason is an Alumni of UCL having studied as a part time student for a master’s degree in Digital Anthropology from 2012-14. His primary focus is ensuring that the services within his area provide functional and practical value to all areas of UCL’s varied academic practice, while still maintaining a core set of tools that can be used generally across the institution.

Senior Learning Technologist

Eliot joined the Digital Education Services team in October 2018. He supports a range of learning technologies with a focus on e-assessment including digital marking workflows, digital rubrics, peer review, and Turnitin. He enjoys working with teachers to utilise technologies for creating engaging learning experiences, facilitating dialogue towards collective learning, and sparking self and peer reflection.

Learning Technologist

Kerry joined the Digital Education VLE Team in March 2023. Over the years, Kerry has worked on a wide range of learning technology projects and training events in Further, Higher, Professional and Medical Education.  Most recently, she specialized in technology to support inclusive education and accessibility at the LSE. At City and Islington College, she supported lecturers with online teaching and assessment, and worked on numerous digital innovation projects in partnership with staff digital leaders. In addition, she introduced Google Classroom and ran a successful Student Digital Ambassador Programme. 

Kerry is also an experienced English teacher and online tutor. She enjoys finding creative ways to engage and motivate learners as well as supporting and inspiring others in their teaching practice. She is interested in current developments in digital learning environments such as the potential of learner analytics and AI to support student progress and improve efficiency, productivity and wellbeing. Kerry is looking forward to working with such a talented, professional team at UCL! 

 

 
Digital Accessibility

The Digital Accessibility team is led by Ben Watson. They are responsible for ensuring that UCL's digital systems and services are as accessible as possible by design. They develop digital accessibility initiatives to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations and provide assistive technology support to students and staff to help everyone get the maximum benefit from the information sources we provide.

Ben, a former law librarian and qualified teacher, has a passion for inclusive design that has led him into researching and implementing approaches to inclusive information and technology provision for education. Ben has experience of working with all UK education sectors (primary, secondary, further and higher education) and many years' experience of working to improve both the physical and digital accessibility of educational organisations.

Matt joined UCL in August 2022 and manages the Digital Accessibility Hub on the Bloomsbury campus. Matt has over 20 years’ experience working with Partially Sighted, Blind and Dyslexic users within Corporate and Education sectors.

Reena joined UCL in August 2017. She provides support to disabled students and staff in assistive technology, both hardware and software, focus on one to one IT training and make recommendations on ergonomic equipment to assist in their working environment.

Georgia joined UCL in January 2023 and in her role she coordinates the team’s projects, communications and events to support the wider Digital Accessibility strategy. She previously worked at an accessibility consultancy specializing in accessible social media and communications, as well as other higher education institutions.

Digital Accessibility Assistant

James joined UCL as Digital Accessibility Assistant in February 2023. He previously completed his MSci in Chemistry, also at UCL, and now takes particular interest in data and technology. James’ focus is primarily on accessibility data analysis, but also includes captioning, alternative formats for printed material, auditing and remediation, and anything else that counts as both technical and supportive.

 
Digital Education Futures

The Digital Education Futures team is led by Steve Rowett. They are responsible for horizon scanning, trialling and evaluating new technologies and pedagogies, as well as designing and evaluating technology-enhanced physical learning spaces.

Steve joined UCL in 2000 after working in a similar role at the University of Surrey. His work at UCL mostly involves developing new services to support and enhance the student experience. These have included the student laptop loan scheme and the Reflect blogging service. His current work is around assessment, including the procurement and implementation of an e-assessment system to support formative and summative assessment.

Janina joined Digital Education Futures in December 2012. Her role involves horizon scanning and trialling new technologies for learning and teaching, including open badges, social media, gamification, augmented reality and anything else that emerges.

Digital Student Experience Product Owner

David joined UCL in 2008 from QMUL. During his career he has been involved in the development and deployment of digital technologies that have transformed the experience of students across the entire lifecycle of their interactions with the University, whether that be through interactions with lecturers, peers, societies, the union, library or many other touch points. As a new member of the team he's excited about defining the vision for a connected, frictionless digital experience for students that multiples and magnifies the benefits the UCL experience delivers.

Learning Technologist

Coral joined UCL as a Learning Technologist in March 2023. She previously held similar roles in both faculty and central teams at the University of Portsmouth for over 10 years.

Coral loves to learn and has a keen interest in human computer interaction, accessibility and immersive technologies. She has an MSc in Information Systems, and is currently a PhD candidate in Creative Technologies, researching how virtual reality can enhance teacher training in higher education. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Senior Learning Technologist

Geraldine joined UCL in 2023 as a Senior Learning Technologist focusing on UCL East. She has worked in Higher Education for over eighteen years, with central and faculty-based learning technology roles at City University of London and London School of Economics. She has a PGCert, is a Fellow of the HEA and a CMALT assessor. She has an interest in learning design, game-based learning, active learning, peer learning, students as producers and students as partners projects. 
 
Digital Skills Development

The Digital Skills Development team is led by Caroline Norris. The team provides training and support to students and staff in the development of digital capabilities.

Caroline has been involved in 'IT Training' for over fifteen years at UCL and set up and ran the Open Learning Centre, managed the European Computer Driving Licence programme and has overseen both staff and student IT training programmes over the years.  She currently manages the Digital Skills Development team which provided training and support for both staff and students to develop their digital capabilities to meet their personal, professional and academic needs. As well as leading the team, Caroline manages and promotes UCL's LinkedIn Learning provision which offers a wide range of video tutorials in creative, business and technical skills and works closely with other training providers as part of the MyLearning team.  She also coordinates student induction activities for ISD.  Caroline has a particular interest in employability and the neuroscience of learning.

Senior IT Trainer

Jim came to UCL in 2005 having previously worked at the Policy Studies Institute, where he supported research computing,  and Birkbeck College, where among other things he taught Applied Computational Linguistics (this was an easy gig because no one knew what it was).  His first post at UCL was a joint appointment with the then Graduate School.

He has worked in almost all areas of Digital Skills training including mainstream off the shelf applications such as Microsoft Office and UCL enterprise applications such as Portico. He has developed training in programming skills and in the Unix operating system.  Over the years Jim has also promoted skills in data analysis software including SPSS, Stata and R.

Jim is a member of the ucisa Digital Capabilities Group and has worked on the last two of the group's Digital Capabilities Surveys of the UK Higher and Further Education sectors.

Initial Teacher Education: Teaching Technology Specialist

Rebecca Wilson has worked for over 20 years as part of the Initial Teacher Education programme at the IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society – the team rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
As part of the UCL Digital Education Team Rebecca continues to promote the innovative use of new technologies as a teaching and learning tool and seeks to develop the skills and knowledge of UCL staff and students. She devises and teaches a range of digital technology sessions and modules in liaison with course teams and delivers sessions on the ISD Digital Skills Development programme. She also works with academic departments to support teaching and learning with technology including initiating global technology projects and facilitating and disseminating innovative digital pedagogy.

David Wong

David Wong

Digital Research Trainer

David joined Digital Skills Development in 2021. He has held numerous IT roles in the University of Cambridge, The Open University, and the University of Reading, from supporting Word 2.0 to sysadmin in a software house. He joined UCL in 2014 as Senior Research IT Services Facilitator.

David is also an associate lecturer at the Open University. He has taught music and IT degree courses, currently on service and project management. His eclectic set of interests and training includes Master's degrees in management (MBA, MEd), software (MSc), divinity (BD), music (PhD), and is a Fellow of the HEA. He has run training on NVivo, Finale and MuseScore (notation), Construct (educational games), video editing, and hosting Zoom.

Samantha Ahern

Senior Digital Research Trainer

Samantha joined UCL in January 2013 and has held a number of roles across Digital Education, Information Security Group, and within the Faculty of the Built Environment.

Her current role is a matrix role working across both Digital Education and Advanced Research Computing. The main focus of my role is to work with ARC on the development of their Education programme.

She is an experienced educator and a critical digital pedagogue with a focus on social justice. In addition, she is a Fellow of the University of London Centre for Online and Distance Education.

Digital Skills Development Coordinator

Katy joined UCL in 2016 and has previously worked in Registry Services in Student Funding and Student Support and Wellbeing. She offers administrative and coordination support to the Digital Skills Development team.
 
Online Learning

The Online Learning team is led by Joanna Stroud and offers learning and instructional design services, consultancy for use of learning technologies, and project management support for course development. It additionally manages a number of platforms to support online degree programmes, short courses for CPD and executive education purposes, and MOOCs.

Jo joined UCL Digital Education in 2017, having held learning technology positions at both research intensive and teaching-focused higher education institutions, including LSHTM, LSE, and Sheffield Hallam University.

She has a cross-institutional responsibility for online and distance education in its many forms, providing guidance relating to online pedagogies and learning design alongside course development processes. She also leads on development of online short courses, acting as service owner for the public-facing learning environment, UCLeXtend, and managing UCL’s relationship with free online course and MOOC provider, FutureLearn. She has co-ordinated the strategic, pedagogic, and developmental components of UCL's move to online teaching as part of its COVID-19 response.

Jo holds a master's degree in Education from the IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, is a Fellow of the HEA and CMALT assessor, and has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Her primary interests in the field of digital education are, as you might expect, fully online teaching and learning, professional education, and open educational practices.

Senior Learning Technologist

Vicky started working at UCL in 2023 as a Senior Learning Technologist. Before this she worked at the University of London for 15 years in a number of roles, most recently as a Senior Learning Designer where she developed online only degree courses and MOOCs for scale learning.

Vicky is an avid learner and an advocate for online learning, having completed her Masters in Online and Distance Education in 2021 at the Open University. She is now enrolled on an online doctoral programme at Lancaster University in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning and hopes to complete her PhD in 2026.

Antonella Veccia

Learning Designer (Online Learning)

Antonella joined UCL In March 2021. She is a Learning Designer with over 15 years’ experience in the educational, commercial and charity sector. During this time, she has advised a very diverse range of clients in digital learning best practice and supported the development and use of digital technologies to harness learner-centred practices.

Antonella’s academic background is in Politics and Modern Languages; she spent more than a decade as a tutor of Italian in many establishments including Oxford Brookes University, Oxford University Language Centre and the UCL Language Centre (CLIE).

Matt O'Rourke

Learning Designer (Online Learning)

Matt first became involved with education in the FE sector as an English language lecturer in the mid 1990’s. He then went on to work abroad for 17 years, both in linguistics and in technology enhanced learning. The majority of overseas postings were with the British Council, but Matt also worked for other organisations including the United Nations and also UCL at their Foundation school in Kazakhstan during this time.

For the past few years, Matt has been working nearer to home as an on-line learning consultant for the HE sector. Recent clients have included The University of Oxford and Imperial College.

Matt has a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. He is interested in photography and video making. He also enjoys creating MOOCs and also working with colleagues who are looking to incorporate innovative technology into their teaching.

George has been working in the field of Digital Education for almost two decades on both the technology and the academic side. He supports all Digital Education technologies with a particular interest in learning design, synchronous/asynchronous teaching, blogging and e-portfolio tools for student work assessment, e-portfolios, professional reflection and dialog, showcasing, online and distance learning and MOOCS. He is particularly interested in the technical aspects and how different technologies can come together to create the best experience for students and tutors in blended pedagogies.
Oliver Vas

Oliver Vas

Course Delivery Manager

Oliver started working at UCL in 2019 as a Teaching and Learning Administrator and has worked in both the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Department of Economics. Before this he was a student at UCL where he completed his Master’s Degree in Chemistry. As the coordinator for the Online Learning Team, Oliver plans and administers the team’s course development work and is responsible for organising various aspects of the course design cycle.
Dionysis Dimakopolous

Online Learning Advisor

 

Dionysis joined UCL Digital Education in 2021 after more than 10 years of managing face-to-face and blended short courses and with over 20 years teaching experience of IT subjects. He is leading digital education support across online programmes, short courses and modules. He is responsible for UCL's public-facing learning environment UCL Extend, as well as the service operations manager of other services including FutureLearn and the Learning Designer app. He splits his time between the Online Learning team and the Education Design product team.

He is the creator and main developer of the Learning Designer tool, on which he has been working since 2009 through multiple roles at Birkbeck and Institute of Education, based in the London Knowledge Lab.  

Dionysis is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Birkbeck, University of London, working on improving the way the Learning Designer tool can help teachers create, discover, adopt and adapt designs, in order to help them deliver outstanding learning experiences to their students.

Online Learning Content Developer

Tim joined UCL in June 2022 with seven years of experience in the education sector. He previously worked at Pearson Education, where he created and edited print and digital content on market-leading ESL (English as a Second Language) titles. Before this, he was based in Madrid where he worked as an ESL teacher and teacher trainer, as well as Content Lead for a digital B2B magazine. Tim obtained a BA in History from the University of Warwick and has a keen interest in applied linguistics and communication within teaching.

Marieke Guy

Marieke Guy

Head of Digital Assessment 

Marieke became Head of Digital Assessment in October 2022. She originally joined UCL in September 2021 as a Digital Assessment Advisor, encouraging the adoption of digital assessment at UCL including the use of a new assessment platform, AssessmentUCL. In this role, she was responsible for supporting assessment in the Population Health Sciences, Life Sciences, and Mathematical & Physical Sciences faculties. Marieke has worked in digital education for over 20 years. She was previously the Learning Technologies Production Manager at the University College of Estate Management (UCEM) and prior to that the Digital Learning Manager at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU). She spent many years as a researcher in digital information at the University of Bath and worked at the Quality Assurance Agency as a data analyst. Her areas of interest include data, open education and pedagogy, cultural change and learning technology. She holds a Senior CMALT and Senior HEA Fellowship.

Isobel Bowditch

Digital Assessment Advisor

Isobel joined UCL Digital Education as a Digital Assessment Advisor in September 2021. She supports the use of digital assessment methods within the School of Life and Medical Science and Engineering Sciences. Before coming to UCL, Isobel worked in Academic Development at London South Bank University (LSBU) and Goldsmiths, roles which included supporting the adoption of digitally enhanced teaching and learning practices, curriculum design – in particular, the design of engaging, meaningful assessment and feedback methods – and leading on the Advance HE CPD route to HEA Fellowship. She also worked in a multi-faceted, fractional role at IoE as a learning technology support/lecturer and programme administrator on a fully online distance learning MA Applied Educational Leadership and Management from its inception (2002). Isobel completed her PhD in Fine Art (practice and theory) from University of the Arts where she was an Associate Lecturer for 15 years (undergraduate and postgraduate). She is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and qualified coach.

Digital Assessment Advisor

Lene Marie joined UCL as a Digital Assessment Advisor in September 2021. She works with the IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society and Law. Before coming to UCL, Lene Marie was an Elearning Advisor at the University of Copenhagen, engaged in curriculum design using the UCL ABC approach, staff training, and production of online teaching materials like online courses, ebooks, illustrations, and video lectures. Before working in HE, Lene Marie was a teacher of Danish as a Second Language for eight years.

Amanda Seller

Digital Assessment Advisor

Amanda works as a Digital Assessment Advisor encouraging and supporting digital assessment across UCL. Prior to joining the team in February 2023, Amanda worked at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society where she supported programmes to innovate and make the best use of digital resources. Amanda comes from a background across education sectors having started out as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Tutor. 
 

Nadia Hussain

Learning Technologist

Nadia joined UCL Digital Assessment team as a Learning Technologist in September 2022. She supports wider assessments with a focus on digital product areas such as Moodle VLE, Turnitin, Wiseflow, etc. Before coming to UCL, Nadia held a similar post at Imperial College London involved in administrating and testing online learning platforms as well as providing training to academics in the use of digital learning technologies. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brunel University.

Digital Assessment Advisor

Claudia joined UCL as a Digital Assessment Advisor in July 2023 and supports digital assessment across Maths and Physical Sciences, Population Health and Life Sciences, as well as providing STEM support in Assessment Futures. 

Previously, Claudia was a Learning Technologist at Imperial College London offering support and training in a range of digital learning technologies and assisting the launch of a fully online Masters programme. Before that, she was also a key figure in the success of Digital Assessment @Brunel, a major project to digitise the majority of assessment and exams at Brunel University London.

Claudia received a BA in Games Design with Creative Writing from Brunel University London and is a serial hobbyist, with interests in everything from weight lifting to insect taxidermy.

 
Educational Media

The Educational Media team is led by Tony Slade and comprises of Media Content creators, Learning Technologists, Media Specialists and Support Officers who produce design, imagery, print and media production work specifically (but not wholly) for learning and teaching, We manage UCL's media applications, Eventbrite, Imagestore, Lecturecast, Mediacentral, Mediapod, MediaLoans, UCL Podcasting and Video Collaboration. Head of Educational Media 

Initially working in the Culture and Museums sector in London, Tony moved into the world of Advertising for 20+ years working across London and the South East.

In the 1990's, combining his commercial work and experience with an interest in educating others, an opportunity arose to act in an educational advisory capacity eventually moving in to Higher Education as a Lecturer in Photographic Practice and the History of Photography.

Joined UCL in 2004, eventually unifying a number of different creative teams and services into the Educational Media team. He is the Product Owner for Media Environments, and the Service Owner for Video Collaboration, Media Production & Eventbrite.

Outside of work, Tony is an avid sports fan and a season ticket holder at his beloved Nottingham Forest FC.

Media Production Manager

Working within UCL for over 25 years and also within research and education for longer, this has given me an appetite for knowledge, and I hope a wider understanding. In short, I will always be trying to learn more and trying to understand as much as I can.

My training within laboratory science and my role within digital education, are two disciplines which now collaborate under the umbrella of the research and knowledge-based environment known as UCL. I will try my best to advice and support within the department.

Media Producer

Teresa’s area of specialism is audio and video. After completing a Multimedia degree in 2004, she supported teaching in the Media Dept of a sixth form college, before joining the IOE as a Media Technician in 2007. She has experience in 1st line customer support through running an AV equipment library, advising staff and students in the use of audio-visual equipment, and has a focus on video production, editing and broadcast in a live event environment.

Diana joined the Educational Media team after one year in an Administrative role at the Institute of Child Health. She comes with an international background in Video Production from various roles she undertook. During her career so far she helped produce over 50 different and complex projects including music videos, TV Advertising and TV series. In more recent years Diana got to work in streaming services and educational content, all this leading to her now joining the team as our Live Events Media Producer and being in charge with delivering live content via various mediums.

In my role as a Media and Learning Technologist at UCL Educational Media, I bring extensive expertise in digital technologies, with a specialised focus on distinct digital product areas such as virtual learning environments and digital media. My primary responsibilities revolve around delivering comprehensive training and support to UCL staff, ensuring their effective utilisation of digital tools. I provide expert guidance and data-driven advice to facilitate informed decision-making.

My duties extend to the implementation, maintenance, and testing of various educational systems, including Lecturecast (Echo360). Additionally, I actively collaborate with agile product teams to drive improvements and innovations in specific digital product domains. My professional journey is characterised by a commitment to cross-functional collaboration, fostering strong relationships with colleagues in the Information Services Division, UCL's educational support services, and the broader educational community across departments and faculties.

Tess joined the UCL team in 2012 from the School of Pharmacy and has been helping staff and students both sites produce high quality posters showcasing their work for over 11 years. She now runs the Large Format Print Service based in the Cruciform Building and helps support the administrative functions of Educational Media.

Mary Hinkley 

Digital Imaging and Archivist

Mary joined UCL as a Photographer in 1989. Throughout her UCL career she has taken a wide variety of imagery for almost all UCL departments, and undertakes staff and student portraiture, departmental group photographs, and pictures of departments at work. Mary specialises in taking images of objects, archaeological artefacts, artwork, books and documents, whilst also taking photographs for departmental websites and promotional content.

Mary is responsible for adding and maintaining the public and private content on UCL Imagestore, adding metadata to files so that they can found more easily.  If you need a specific image but cannot find it on Imagestore Mary may be able to help, especially as the department holds an archive of historical digital imagery along with traditional negatives. In her role as an archivist Mary also can scan and provide digital files for both promotion and research use.

Lead Graphic Designer

Rakhee joined UCL Educational Media in 2021, prior to that she worked for UCL Health Creatives providing graphic and digital design, and print management for UCL, partner organisations, as well as external health and medical associations for over 18 years.
 
Her core skills include designing brochures, posters, flyers, packaging, infographics, graphs and animations for both print and digital media. She has a strong passion for design, with an emphasis on typography, colour and illustration.

David Smithson

David joined UCL Educational Media in 2021, prior to that he worked for UCL Health Creatives at Great Ormond Street Hospital providing graphic and digital design, and print management for UCL, NHS partner organisations, as well as external health, science and medical institutions for over 25 years.

His core skills include illustration, infographics, brochure design, posters, and flyers for both print and digital media. He has a strong passion for illustration (mainly schematic and informatic) and infographic design (backed with a degree in Graphic Information Design).

Anisa joined UCL in 2019, where she has worked as the Digital Education Services Specialist, Head of Digital Assessment and currently leads the Digital Education Support Team. Her current role is to lead a cross-functional team which supports multiple products across the Digital Education Department, as well as working closely with the faculty learning technology leads.

In her previous positions, she worked at QMUL(Queen Mary University of London) in multiple learning technology positions with a focus on support, teaching and specialism in core digital technologies (VLE, Lecture Capture, Assessment) and has also taught on the Postgraduate Certificate Academic Practice (PGCAP) programmes, F2F and Distance learning modules. She previously worked as the Head of Digital Assessment to lead a new team to encourage the adoption of digital assessment at UCL, including the use of a new assessment platform, Wiseflow. She holds a PGCE in Education, Masters in Science, CMALT and has a good understanding of Agile ways of working and practices.

Zaman has been working in various departments of ISD since 2008, joining the Digital Education Services team in 2012 to provide E-Learning training and support.

Pauline joined UCL in 2012, becoming a member of the Digital Education team in December 2021. With a keen interest in supporting technologies that facilitate and enhance learning, Pauline provides support of Digital Education core services such as Moodle, Lecturecast and Turnitin.

Tom has been working for ISD since February 2017 when he was a UCL History student, joining on a permanent basis in April 2021. He moved to the Digital Education team in January 2022 and enjoys fixing problems, with a strong focus on improving staff and students' online experience at UCL.

Irina Niculescu

Senior Learning Technologist

Irina joined UCL in May 2023 as a senior learning technologist with a focus on training and staff development. Empowering others to take advantage of the transformative potential of technologies and digital practices is central to her work. She enjoys collaborating with academics to provide consultancy for the pedagogy of learning design within blended and online contexts. She has been working in Higher Education since 2015. 

In her previous role, at University of Surrey, she managed a team of learning designers, led staff development programmes, digital education projects and student-staff partnerships. Also, she has taught on an MA in Education and Learning and Teaching PG Cert programmes. 

Irina is currently exploring and training in approaches to systemic modelling of change. She is particularly interested in the human and social aspects of digital practices.

Christina Ioanna Galliou

Learning Technologist

Christina holds a Master of Education and Technology from UCL and is a published author in accessible design bringing a wealth of expertise in Learning Technologies and E-Learning. Prior to joining UCL at 2023 she was a Learning Technologist at London Business School and before that an E-Learning Content Developer at King's College London. Within UCL, Christina supports a range of learning technologies, collaborates cross-functionally with the teams in digital education, focuses on staff development and training, and provides another line of support for learning technologists at UCL. 

There are a number of Learning Technology Leads based in faculties and departments, they are responsible for supporting and disseminating best practice within their faculty/department, which includes managing projects, running local workshops and supporting staff.

Matteo Fumagalli

Department of Anthropology
Matteo supports the organisation of the Clinical Neuroscience, Clinical Neurology and Brain & Mind Sciences programmes for which he is the first point of contact for students as well as liaising with academics; Matteo's efforts are geared towards offering a great learning experience to MSc students and ensuring high quality standards on these programmes. His role also entails supporting all MSc programmes at the Institute of Neurology from an administrative and pedagogical point of view, keeping consistent what we offer students across teaching, assessment and learning resources.
Matteo's background is in Education Sciences and in the last few years he has developed a keen interest in using learning technologies in university. He has taken part in numerous projects where the use of learning technologies helped enhancing teaching practice for academics as well as the student learning experience. Matteo was recently been awarded the Certified Membership of the Association for Learning Technology and the Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Fiona has worked in education for over twenty years, including as an IT Lecturer and in HE as an Education Developer and Leader of Digital Education, supporting staff and students to develop their digital literacies skills. She has been involved nationally in online learning including creating and leading Students as Champions  (iChamps), open badges and ePortfolios. In 2014-2017 she was the President of the Association of Learning Technology. 

She has studied online for all her degrees.  She completed her BSc in Psychology (Derby), MSc Digital Education (Edinburgh) and is undertaking her PhD via Lancaster University online programme e-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning.

Abbi joined UCL in July 2020. Previously a Learning Technologist at St. Mary’s University, Abbi is a Fellow of the HEA, and a CMALT assessor (with a CMALT specialism in fostering Digital Confidence). Abbi is particularly fond of Moodle, and quite excessively enjoys designing solutions and workflows in available platforms.

Outside higher education, Abbi has continuously run online businesses since 1998, cultivating the belief that effective digital design (commercial, pedagogical or recreational) is led by the intended audience and outcome alike.

Faculty Learning Technology Lead (MAPS)

Richard joined UCL in August 2020. He has over 30 years’ experience across business and education, working in fields as diverse as the defence industry, management consultancy, web design / development and both secondary and higher education. He holds a BSc in Psychology from UCL, a Masters level qualification in User Experience from the Open University, and both a PGCE in Secondary Science and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Exeter

Richard has taught both face-to-face and online for many years, working with secondary school pupils, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and with adult learners, in both formal and informal contexts. He has a special interest in forms of assessment, in particular the notion of authentic assessment and how it can help learners connect with the world of work.

Richard’s research is focused on ecological approaches to educational technology, in particular the concept of affordance; not only how this key term has been interpreted in multiple disciplines, but also its potential value in helping to align pedagogy and technology. He is also interested in the notion of digital spaces and digital places, and how the ‘chronotope’ of the digital might enable unique learning experiences.

Anna joined UCL in February 2020 and has since then worked with the Faculty of Engineering. Anna is a trained teacher, holding a PhD in Drama and Theatre which enables her to understand the demand on academics and can support them based on her experiences from an academic perspective and learning technologist. She became interested in learning technology whilst working in the charity sector.

Kat joined the Faculty of Engineering in 2022, previously she worked as a Programme Administrator for an MSc within the Institute of Epidemiology and Healthcare. Kat has worked in Higher Education since 2015 holding a mixture of event management and administrative roles. She enjoys all aspects of Moodle, particularly finding activities which increase student engagement with module materials. With degrees in Humanities subject, she can analyse a situation from several perspectives and find the best solution, with backups at the ready!

Robbie started at UCL in 2010 and has worked for the Departments of Greek and Latin, German, Scandinavian Studies, Italian, the Ear Institute, Computer Science, ICH, Office for International Affairs, CenTras, SELCS, Clinical Educational and Health Psychology and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. His current role as Faculty Learning Technology Lead entails Faculty-level coordination of learning technology support to ensure that effort and expertise is guided, deployed and cascaded to best effect to departmental teams.

Tim Neumann

Faculty Learning Technology Lead (The IOE)

Tim is a Lecturer in Education and Technology at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, and leads the IOE Learning Technologies Unit, based at the UCL Knowledge Lab.

Tim has experience as a learning technology consultant in further education and remote organisational learning contexts. He has been involved in research and consultancy projects on e-assessment, online collaboration, learning design and academic development. With a background as a sound engineer and media producer, Tim's expertise includes large scale events and mass participation, as well as web conferencing, communication and online pedagogy.

Tim teaches IOE postgraduate modules online, which brings a direct practical perspective to his work as the IOE Faculty Learning Technology Lead.
