This module introduces general management principles and their relevance to all aspects of library, archive and information sector practice.
During the module we will consider the ethical and legal context of information services. We will examine organizational, strategic, financial, marketing and evaluative principles and practice. We will look at issues involved in human resource planning and development, and leadership.
The importance of analytical, personal and transferable management and communication competencies to meet the demands of a changing professional environment is emphasized.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the module, students will be able to
- discuss the purpose and activities of management for information professionals
- describe ethical, social and legal responsibilities
- demonstrate an understanding of change management and strategic approach for service development
- plan and prioritise budget expenditure and resources
- identify and respond to human resource management issues
- put into practice key transferable skills including self-management and communication skills essential for information managers
Learning and teaching uses a mixed approach combining:
- talks from tutors and visiting practitioners
- preparatory viewing of content on the virtual learning site, in preparation for classes
- seminars and class discussions
- practical exercises
- group projects
- private study

- Session 8 - The Service Evaluator [Talk, practical and group-work]
- Session 9 - The Human Resource Manager [Talk, seminar and group-work]
- Session 10 - The Problem Solver [Talk, practical and group-work presentations]
Assessment: Assessment is by a combination of coursework assignments. (There is no examination for this module).

Compulsory for: MA Library and Information Studies
Open to: All other DIS students, as their programme timetables permit.
Auditing the module: Students registered for DIS programmes may sit in on this module by agreement with the tutor, but must be prepared to join in with all group-work, seminars, practical class exercises and discussions.
